The Modern Girls Guide To Life Book: Fully Revised and Updated

The Modern Girl is back with more tips, hacks & beauty fun! From author and trend expert Jane Buckingham, (formerly of the Style channel), founder of Trendera and newly crowned Job Genius of the new ABC Family Show “Job or No Job,”

THE MODERN GIRLS GUIDE TO LIFE (on sale 9/29/15) has been completely revamped for a new generation of MG’s. A lot has changed over the past decade, and leave it to Jane to keep us Modern Girls up-to-date!

Covering everything from parties to porn, interviewing to Instagramming, crockpot cooking to cosmetics, and all that’s in-between, The Modern Girls Guide to Life doesn’t try to tell you how to be perfect. It simply tells you the stuff you need to know, but no one thinks to tell you—like how your shape wear can get uncomfortably hot unless it contains cotton (good to know before you find yourself sweating away your blowout at the company holiday party).

I have been a long time fan of Jane Buckingham and will provide a review to share with all of my Modern Girls very soon!

Butter London Lip Crayon and Nail Lacquer – Product Review

Butter London has expanded their line of cosmetics from nail polish to lip crayons, mascara, and eyeliner.  I have been (super) lucky to receive a box of their samples this summer.  The products could not have arrived at a better time and I was eager to share the experience.

Butter London Lip CrayonFullSizeRender

Product Review (rating 1 – 10)

The Lip Crayons are amazing and come in a variety of shades.  There’s a lip color for every skintone; beauty enthusiasts and makeup artist can have a good time with this product.  The lip pencil is very large (makes it easy to shape the lips) and leaves a creamy finish.  It also smells nice with a mild vanilla scent and the pigment is true to shade.  I give this product a thumbs up and rating of the number 10.

Let’s talk about Allure & Butter London‘s collaboration with a fabulous new nail lacquer collection titled,  Arm Candy!  The theme for the box was take self-expression to the next level with a range of colors and finishes. There were individual lacquers such as Nude Stilettos, Statement Piece, I’m on The List, It’s Vintage, Disco Nap, Lust or Must; the 4-Piece Fashion Lacquer Collection inluded Violet’s Revenge, The Sweet Spot, So Major, Front Row.

Same as the lip crayons, every shade was true to color but most importantly, the polish gave a salon finish.  It was easy to use (or glide) with a specialized top to eliminate spillage.  The nail lacquer also dries fast due to the fact I (always) polish my nails at the last minute.  I give this nail collection a thumbs up and rating of the number 9.

KptnCook App – How To Get Your Kitchen Back-To-School Ready

A new school year can turn even the most organized kitchen into a chaotic mess. Whether you’re off to college, or sending your little one to their first day of school, keeping the kitchen in order can be hectic!

Check out tips from KptnCook App, helping us get our kitchen’s back-to-school ready.  Follow these tried and tested back-to-school suggestions for a stress-free start to the semester!

Fresh start

There’s nothing like an untidy pantry to send your cooking motivation into a tailspin. Set some time aside to clear everything out of your cupboards and give the shelves a good wipe down. Throw out anything that is past the use by date, and any products you know won’t be eaten, looking at your pawpaw pretending to be mango. Be unmerciful and make some room!

The essentials

Having all the basics at your fingertips makes meal prep easy as pie – which incidentally, can be a little tricky to make. Ensure you have these essential items in your pantry:

  • Olive oil
  • Salt & pepper
  • Dried herbs and spices including; oregano, basil, rosemary, thyme, chili, turmeric and coriander, paprika, allspice, nutmeg, cumin and cinnamon. Don’t forget fresh garlic too
  • Flour, and sugar
  • Grains such as; pasta, rice, quinoa and buckwheat
  • Canned goods including; chickpeas, lentils, white beans, corn, tomatoes, and tuna

Within arm’s reach

Gather all the kitchen utensils and gadgets, and group them into most used and least used. Place your most used items nearest to your cooking area and the least used things further away. This way, for example, your baking tins aren’t getting in the way of the toaster, which you use every morning.

Stock up on kitchen supplies

Make those leftovers more accessible with a selection of different sized clear containers. If you have these at your disposal, you can scoop up any leftovers and have them for lunch the next day. They are also a handy for neatly storing herbs and spices. Bonus tip: if you freeze your leftovers make sure you label what it is and when you put it in the freezer.

Cooking inspiration

Getting dinner cooked and on the table is a key source of stress for Americans, with 33 percent saying that cooking healthy meals is a constant worry*. To reduce stress levels, these blogs are always a good source of inspiration:

How To Remove a Gel Manicure – Skyy Hadley

There are many positives to having a gel manicure – It stays for two weeks without chipping and looks shinier than a normal manicure. However, all good things must come to an end and it’s important to learn how to safely and effectively remove a gel manicure at home. You may not have the time or money to get your gel mani removed at a salon and it’s essential to learn because it can be harmful to your nails when removing gel improperly. By peeling off a gel manicure, you are not only removing the gel, but also the top layers of your nails. This can result in white patches and textural irregularities throughout the nails.

Skyy Hadley, owner of As U Wish Nail Spa provides tips and a step-by-step tutorial to safely remove your own gel manicure:

  • File – Use an emery board to lightly buff each nail to remove the shiny top coat so you’re left with a powdery finish. Be careful not to over buff so you don’t hit your natural nail underneath the gel.
  • Soak – Next you must soak your nails in 100% acetone polish remover. To do this, take a piece of cotton ball the size of your nail and pour the acetone on it, place it on your nail and cover your nail with a piece of aluminum foil or tape to keep it in place. Do this on every nail and let soak for 15 minutes to relax the gel.
  • Remove – Remove the cotton pieces from your nails and take a wooden cuticle stick to push the gel polish off your nails. If you have trouble, instead of forcing it, soak your nails with a cotton ball for 5 more minutes and try again.
  • Moisturize – After the gel has been removed, wash your hands and apply a cuticle oil to the nail and cuticle. This will rehydrate your nails after using acetone on them to keep them strong and healthy between polishes.

It’s important to take your time when removing a gel manicure yourself as it can be a slow process and you want to treat your nails very delicately and carefully to avoid weakening them.

JoJoba Rosehip Skin Care Oil – Product Review

The beautiful, brand new 100% Natural Jojoba and Rosehip Skin Care Oil is fresh out of Australia. What makes this product so unique is that it combines the carrying benefits of 100% Natural Jojoba with Rosehip Oil to deliver nutrients to the deeper layers of skin where Rosehip Oil is unable to go by itself.  Essentially, it makes Rosehip Oil work even better!  Here’s more information:

Rosehip Oil, like The Jojoba Company’s 100% Natural Australian Jojoba, is commonly used as a natural moisturizer and on skin conditions such as wrinkles and scarring. However, Rosehip Oil is a plant oil, a triglyceride which is only able to penetrate into the upper layers of skin. Therefore, it is not easily absorbed deep into the skin. As a result, this can clog skin pores leading to breakouts and blackheads.  On the other hand, Jojoba is the only plant in the world known to produce a liquid wax like that found in healthy, young human skin. Hence, when Jojoba is applied to skin it is instantly recognised as its own. Skin opens its pores and the Jojoba penetrates to the deeper layers of the skin carrying whatever is added to it with it:

Intense hydration

Naturally rich in antioxidants

Naturally rich in vitamins A, D & E

Naturally rich in omega fatty acids 3, 6 & 9

Suitable for all skin types

Ideal for scarring and stretch marks

Longer shelf life than Rosehip Oil

Suitable for all skin types

Product Review:

This amazing product showed up on my front door step in a beautiful lavender bottle.  I’m a sucker for details so that alone made me excited to try the product.

Like every woman (beyond a certain age) I was seeking a great multi-tasking skin care oil.  Personally, multi-tasking products make my life easier because they serve more than one function.  The significance of JoJoba + Rosehip Skin Care Oil is that it penetrates to deeper layers of the skin.  That’s a big factor for me because I suffer from dry skin; while most products only hydrate the surface area.  It’s also all natural, loaded with tons of healthy vitamins (read above.)

You can apply the JoJoba + Rosehip Skin Care Oil both morning and night.  I used the product on my face and around my tummy area (baby stretch marks) and legs.  I also applied it during the day when I noticed the appearance of dry spots.  This is a scent-less product and there’s no concern for smelling floral (or citrus) during the day.
