First Lady Jill Biden was Spotted Wearing Designer Heather B. Moore’s Jewelry

On several occasions, First Lady Jill Biden was spotted wearing designer Heather B. Moore’s personalized jewelry. Moore’s approachable designs have helped wearers personalize and memorialize important people, places, and events in their lives. Her designs have won industry awards for more than a decade.

“Our approach is to find out what’s most important to the customer,” says Moore. “It might be a drawing made by one of their children, the date or place they were married, or a note from one of their grandparents. Those define who you are, and we turn them into jewelry so that they are always with you. You might start out with one memory, like the day your child was born, then add to that over the years, one piece at a time.”

Dr. Biden has been spotted wearing several different combinations of her pieces (including at least one with her children’s names), something that the Heather B. Moore collection makes it easy to do.

“We help you pick the right pieces to express your style,” says Heather. “That way, you have a fresh look for each occasion. All of our pieces are handmade in the US, too, and designed right here in Cleveland, Ohio.”

Heather B. Moore was the original designer who brought personalization to fine jewelry. In addition to making her work available through dozens of fine jewelry stores across the country, Moore also offers online design services at heatherbmoore.com for those who don’t have a local source.

“I started this company to help people cherish who they are. Knowing that the FLOTUS is a fan is a dream come true!”

Hosea Helps Historic Pivot For 2021 Holiday Events

Hosea Helps, Inc., in its 50th year of service, kicks off its 2021 Holiday Festival of Services with the Great Turkey Drop-off, followed by the Annual Thanksgiving Event. This year’s holiday events will be another historic first for the organization battling against the covid-19 pandemic. They will hold the annual Thanksgiving and Christmas food distributions one week before the holiday to better provide for families in need. This pivot allows them to distribute all of the fixings for a delicious holiday meal in time for families to prepare and serve on the actual holiday. The Thanksgiving drive-thru food distribution will take place on November 19, 2021, from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm in the Blue Lot across from the Georgia World Congress Center’s C building off Northside Drive, entering on Maple Street. By doing the holiday food distribution a week in advance, they’re empowering families by giving them time to prepare and enjoy a scrumptious home-cooked meal on Thanksgiving Day – No more frozen turkeys on the holiday!

This historic holiday event will be a two-fold holiday giving extravaganza. This is the first time in history that Hosea Helps will be receiving in-kind donations and distributing food boxes and supplies simultaneously. This year, Hosea Helps is working with a world-renowned service organization, which they will announce early next week, to kick off the 2021 Holiday Food Drive. This extraordinary group of volunteers will lead the charge in donating poultry, canned goods, pantry items, and household supplies. In addition, volunteers will be working both sides of the giving spectrum by accepting food drive donations from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and helping to distribute food boxes and supplies to families on the other side. Hosea Helps has never had so many volunteers that they could receive and distribute donations at the same time.

The Great Turkey Drop-off will take place on November 11, 2021, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Hosea’s corporate donors, Publix Supermarkets and Kroger, along with donations from the philanthropic community, including Simon Guobadia, will deliver turkeys to the new Hosea Headquarters located at 2545 Forrest Hills Drive, SW Atlanta, GA 30315 for distribution during this seasons Festival of Services that include Thanksgiving, Christmas, MLK Day.

“We are so excited and grateful that these volunteers committed to partnering with us to help meet the rising demand for food and supplies for families in need during the holidays. The after-effects of Covid and the shortages in the supply chain have caused a decrease in the availability of turkeys this year, ultimately driving the costs up too high for us to buy in large quantities. That’s why this year’s Great Turkey Drop-off  by our corporate sponsors and the donation drive by our volunteers is so important. We hope that these donations will help us fill the gap between our supply and the community need.”, says Elizabeth Omilami, CEO of Hosea Helps.

Participating families must register for the 11/19/21 Thanksgiving food distribution on the Hosea Helps website at www.4hosea.org to receive groceries and supplies prior to the event. For more information on Hosea Helps and its programs, visit the website or follow on social media @4Hosea.

ESSENCE DIGITAL COVER FEATURES ACTRESS ZAZIE BEETZ

ESSENCE’s hot new digital cover features Emmy-nominated actress Zazie Beetz who stars in the upcoming Netflix original film, The Harder They Fall. The stunning actress, who is as known for her loosely structured textured hairstyles and natural makeup as she is for playing “Domino” in Deadpool 2 and “Van” in the FX series Atlanta, looks resplendent in Versace, Giuseppe Zanotti, Alexander Wang, Lagos KSL and more. In the story, A Reluctant Star, she talks to ESSENCE’s Senior Entertainment Editor Brande Victorian about chasing excellence and not fame, choosing acting and being accepted in the entertainment industry so quickly:
  • The Rise of Her Profile“It was an adjustment in terms of what I felt I deserved and what I earned. I questioned whether I had earned my place yet. ‘Was I just lucky?’ That was very tortuous for me for a long time…”
  • On Choosing Acting“After I graduated, I was like, ‘I’ve spent so much time acting. I can’t not try it.’ I think after high school, I was like, ‘I can’t get trapped in this. What are my other things?’ And then I had an opportunity to see those other things–and I chose acting again…”
  • On Fame“The amount of people that are famous nowadays is so much more than 10 or 20 years ago, and there’s a much larger sort of gray space in terms of mid-fame, mid-level and B-list celebrity versus A-list celebrity. Sometimes I wonder, ‘Am I continuing down the path of no return?’ Like, would I want more? Would I not want more? But I’m speaking about it in terms of fame rather than artistry. What is arrival? I don’t really know, but I think there’s a lot more I want to do…”

Minority Mental Health Matters with Dr. Eliza Belle

Dr. Eliza Belle is a Licensed Psychologist and Board Certified Forensic Examiner. She currently serves as the Director of Psychological and Behavioral Services for Alabama’s Department of Mental Health.

Let’s talk about discrepancies in mental health treatment between minorities and non-minorities.

20% of African American adults are more likely to experience more negative impacts from mental health issues. However, they are less likely to receive it due to misdiagnosis, lack of culturally responsive health care professionals, and socioeconomic factors.

18% of US adults have a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year, and approximately 4% of adults have a serious mental illness.

Mental disorders are among the topmost costly health conditions for adults 18 to 64 in the U.S., along with cancer and trauma-related disorders.

Black people with mental health conditions, particularly schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, and other psychoses are more likely to be incarcerated than people of other races.

Dr. Eliza Belle Mental Health Tips:

How to Relax

Visualization – Close your eyes and picture your peaceful place

Deep breathing – Take a few minutes to slowly breathe in and out. Deep breaths for the win.

Meditation – This will allow you to focus on your body, thoughts, and surroundings.

Unplug – set boundaries for communication, use of devices, and response to requests of your time.

Deep Breaths – Controlled breathing is your body’s built-in calming system. When things feel overwhelming, take a moment to take deep breaths and exhale. This will calm your heart rate and allow you a moment to reset.

Get Up & Move – Adjusting your posture and movement can change your brain’s signals and help reduce stress, depression, and anxiety.

Journal – Journaling allows you to process events, identify what is causing you stress and clarify your feelings. It is a great tool to help gain self-awareness in stressful situations.

Talk to a Loved One -Speaking with someone allows you to express your feelings. It also allows an unbiased party the opportunity to introduce an alternative perspective.

MMCA PARTNERS WITH STARZ AND NABJ TO HOST INAUGURAL MEDIA DIVERSITY EXCELLENCE AWARDS RECEPTION #TakeTheLead

This year’s honorees for the inaugural Media Diversity Excellence Awards Reception include “Newsmaker” Award recipient Karine Jean-Pierre (White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary) and “Impact Journalist” Award recipient Trymaine Lee (Pulitzer Prize and Emmy Award Winning Journalist, MSNBC Columnist “Into America,” Podcast Host).

“Partnering with NABJ and MMCA to honor this year’s Media Diversity Excellence Award recipients and discuss our #TakeTheLead initiative aligns with our commitment to promote representation on screen, behind the camera and throughout the organization,” said Jeffrey Hirsch, President and CEO of STARZ.  “Collaborations like this one are an important way for us to engage with impactful and diverse voices that are leading change.”
