Event Recap: Mdurvwa Pop Up Shop hosted by Teena Leone

On Sunday, June 9, 2013 I had the opportunity to attend The Mdurvwa Pop Up Shop hosted by Teena Leone (from Fashion for Breakfast) along with jewelry designer Deborah Mdurvwa and R&B Singer, Lil Mo.  The event was held at a local boutique (in Federal Hill, Baltimore) titled The Lovelace Showroom.

I had a great time at this event for a variety of reasons.  Number one, I love supporting other bloggers because we truly have a passion for what we do and understand the dynamics and hard work that goes into maintaing a website.  Number two, it was my first time visiting The Lovelace Showroom and I adore the “vibe” that’s in this boutique.  From chandelier ceilings to sequin drapes, this is my type of boutique! Lastly, it’s always nice to meet other fashionistas living in the Baltimore area.

Everyone who attended the event also had the opportunity to enjoy cupcakes, light refreshments, and music played by a local DJ.

I give the event a thumbs up and looking forward to the next event hosted by Teena!

Father’s Day Finds at Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany & Co. celebrates Dad with high style this Father’s Day.  He’ll look debonair in Ziegfeld monogram cuff links from The Great Gatsby collection by Tiffany & Co., inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s film in collaboration with Catherine Martin.

A messenger satchel and zippered billfolds from the Tiffany Leather Collection are thoughtfully designed for Dads on the go.  Or outfit him with classic, sterling silver accessories from a plaid business card case to a moneyclip.

Frends Headphones: So Fashionable, So Chic

I am obsessed with the latest set of headphones for trendsetters.  Frends headphones are so stylish and chic, they literally look like oversized studd earrings.

There are severals reasons why we should all grab a pair of these headphones.  Number one, they sit over the ear which makes for comfortable listening.  Number two, the headphones allow you to make hands-free phone calls.  And lastly, they come in gold, rose (which looks chrome) and silver/black.

To sum it up, I am planning to purchase a pair of these headphones in the very, near future.  Frends Headphones can be purchased at Nordstrom, Best Buy, and Brookstone.

How to Find Maternity Swimwear “That Suits” by Guest Contributor Sally Neal

Shopping for maternity clothes can be a nightmare. In fact, shopping for anything baby-related can be a pretty trying experience. From the day you find out you’re expecting, your house will gradually become full of scraps of paper on which you have listed the next ten things you need to buy. Your partner will watch in slow-mo horror as the balance in the joint bank account rapidly plummets from ‘acceptable’ to ‘getting slightly worried’. The spare room will be piled high with prams, Moses baskets, baby-grows donated by well-meaning friends and family and all sorts of other paraphernalia.

Not that I’m trying to put you off, rather I want to help you during such a busy time. Take a leaf out my book: don’t sweat the small stuff. For example, I spent a great deal of time trying on maternity swimming costumes and bikinis in the shops when I was expecting, only to realise that I could have found one on line. The Internet is a fantastic tool to use when you are pregnant, as there are loads of handy hints about what you need to do and lots of blogs which you can read.

I also felt under quite a lot of pressure to do a sufficient amount of exercise whilst pregnant. At first, I carried on with my normal light jogging routine, but after a while I found running was too much to contend with. Going for long walks sounded like an attractive option, but unfortunately I worked full time up until 8 months so I could not devote time to doing this. Then I found out that swimming was a viable alternative.

In terms of exercise, for example, swimming is one of the best ways a Mum-to-be can get the exercise she needs without overstretching. In terms of swimwear, fashion lines are much more au fait with flattering a pregnant wearer than a decade ago, hence there is a much wider choice of cossies to choose from. Comfort and flexibility make for a comfortable bikini or swim suit.

Here’s how to choose a swim suit to suit you:

-Pick a bikini or costume with adjustable straps to support your bust, should you need additional support in this area

– If you are feeling smaller on top, a halter neck bikini top will enhance your bust. Bright colours or ruffles will also help draw attention to the bust

-As many women are blessed with large hips, a heavily detailed swimsuit or a halter neck style works well to draw attention from this area. Should you opt for a bikini, wearing darker bottom halves will focus the eyes on the top

-If you have a boyish figure, choosing a low-leg swimsuit will make your body appear longer
So, grab a swimming costume and get rid of all that pregnancy stress by going for a swim. It can’t be that bad, as people do it again and again! In fact, I’m currently pregnant with baby number two! Better start writing some more lists…

I also hope that you like the “snapback” compliments of my hubby, especially since it’s Orioles (baseball) season.

Trend Alert: The Evolution of the Pencil Skirt Summer 2013 by Contributing Author Janita Smith

Many of us are excited about summer and can not wait to pull out our lace shorts and maxi dress!  But what I am seeing this season is the evolution of the pencil skirt; making its mark in the office but social scene as well.

Pencil
There are several ways that fashion girls are wearing pencil skirts; making this trend “sassy” but yet classy.

As a freelance stylist, I love the fact that this look (below) has transformed the everyday woman (who’s on the go) to the lady who wants to “own her style” by adding a little edge. And personally, I like to wear my pencil skirt with a graphic tee and pumps!

Ultimately, there are several options for how women can wear a pencil skirt.  Tell me, how do you like to wear your pencil skirt?

Hat Inspiration and The Great Gatsby Movie

Hello Ladies,

I have been curious about the timeless women’s hat that is worn in The Great Gasby movie. In case you too were wondering, I wanted to let you know the one I favor is called a “Cloche Bucket Bell” hat.

This blog post features a picture of me wearing one a while back that I purchased at Nordstrom inside of The Mall in Columbia. I like these hats because they can be worn casually (as in my picture) or you can dress them up and wear out with evening attire!

Drop me a comment and let me know your thoughts on this hat, or even tag me on Instagram @kpearl2 with a pic of you wearing one of these type of hats for a chance to have your pic featured in a larger upcoming blog post!

Trend Alert: Neon Embellishments by Guest Contributor Amy Lavelle

Neons were once the “preserve” of the rave scene and for someone whose teen years were largely spent in the 90s, neons will forever recall Cyberdog silver miniskirts with Hi Vis accents and bright pink fuzzy leg warmers, drug fuelled psychedelic dance parties and TECHNO, TECHNO, TECHNO.

Or, for the nu rave second wavers, Cyberdog window displays, layers of fluoro plastic Topshop bangles and friends’ questionable Facebook pictures of trips to Ibiza drowning under foam with only bright stripes of colour and pumping glo sticks to identify them (and TECHNO, TECHNO, TECHNO!). The chances are for you, neon may be more lurid tutus on hen parties (Claire’s Accessories own, natch) and essential dress code for a trip to Magaluf. Each to their own.

Loud, garish, and brash, let’s face it: neons have a sketchy past and oft a bad rep. Appropriated with ease as they are by the poorly reputable (has a pastel ̶  neon’s insipid sister trend this season ̶  anything ever been peeled off  before a fishbowl-fuelled shagathon?), neons are like the older girls at school who’d wear DMs, whilst inspiring awe in younger girls with their worldly sophistication and tales of illicit snogging.

neons1

Of course, if you’re feeling slightly dubious about the effect of lime green on your complexion, or understandably concerned about being mistaken for a lollipop lady, there’s no need to immerse yourself in DayGlo like a radioactive traffic cone to wear this trend.

Simple neon embellishments on otherwise neutral items (a popped collar; a bright hem) will leave you on the right side of Alex Mack, or brighten up an otherwise plain outfit with neon accessories: a bright shoe with your LBD and a splash of coloured clutch will carry you through without inspiring a single comment about returning to your home planet.

Spring is finally here: let’s throw off the shackles of our dove grey winter wardrobes and embrace the brights anew.  And honestly, who wouldn’t want to be one of the cool girls hanging out behind the bike shed over their drippy, prim pastel counterparts?
