Dove & Kelly Rowland Hair Anthem Inspires Girls Everywhere To Rock Their Hair

Tyrelle Davis and Faith Fennidy, both 11- years old, made headlines when they were sent home from school because of their hair extensions. Eleven-year-old Jorja Orrick was bullied for having short hair, which prompted her sister Sarah to cut her own locks in solidarity. With real stories like these and a history of helping young girls build self-esteem, Dove was inspired to join forces with Kelly Rowland to write and produce an original song titled, “Crown” — a power anthem that aims to break down the narrow definition of beautiful hair and encourage girls to feel confident in wearing it how they choose. The resounding call: “Wear it proud. #MyHairMyCrown.

“Growing up, I felt many of the pressures young girls face today when it comes to embracing their hair, but my mom would always tell me that your hair is your crowning glory and you should wear it proudly,” said Kelly Rowland. “This song is very personal to me and, having met many of the real girls who inspired it, I am incredibly proud to be partnering with Dove to spark this conversation and encourage girls everywhere to love their hair.”

Dove has long been committed to celebrating all hair types and styles through campaigns such as Love Your Curls and Love Your Hair. To further these efforts, the brand conducted a survey to better understand how to inspire hair confidence in young girls. The study found that 65 percent of young girls view their hair as a form of self-expression, however, nearly 50 percent say their hair can make them feel self-conscious. The brand also discovered that 71 percent of girls look to music as an influential factor in their lives, which inspired the brand to reach girls through this medium with the creation of “Crown”.

“Dove wants all young girls, and women, to have the confidence to wear their hair any way they choose and to see their hair as a source of confidence, not anxiety,” said Piyush Jain, Unilever Vice President of Marketing and General Manager of Hair Care. “As a brand, we are committed to celebrating all hair types, especially for young girls who start thinking about their hair’s appearance as early as age 7. Working with Kelly Rowland to produce ‘Crown’ allows us to share that message in an exciting way that we believe will resonate with girls everywhere.”

To help spread the anthem’s inspiring message, the brand will make a cameo during “E! Live From The Red Carpet: The 2019 Grammy Awards” ahead of the biggest award show in music on February 10, 2019. The special two-minute, a televised spot will feature clips from the music video for “Crown”, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, and a special message from Kelly Rowland to inspire people everywhere to join in the #MyHairMyCrown conversation.

Additionally, Dove Global Self-Esteem Ambassador, Jess Weiner, and Dove Self-Esteem Educator, Dre Brown, will lead an impactful workshop specifically designed to address topics around expressing self-confidence through embracing and celebrating all hair types. Kelly Rowland will reveal the curriculum and serve as a mentor during the workshop with young people from a local Boys & Girls Club. Dove is the largest provider of self-esteem education in the world. Through the Dove Self-Esteem Project, we have reached 29 million young people with a goal to reach another 20 million by 2020. Dove is encouraging young girls and women from all over to join in spreading this anthem far and wide. Head to YouTube and Vevo to watch and share the music video and exclusive behind the scenes content featuring the real girls who inspired the song.

Debuting February 6, 2019, the single will be released on Universal Music’s Island Records UK and available to stream on all streaming platforms.

3 Easy Tips for Treating Afro Hair

After decades of spending small fortunes on relaxing and weaving their hair – read, stressing! – many women have decided to finally call it quits by going back to their natural roots and letting their afros come out to play.

With the rise of racial bias, hairstyles such as the afro and braids have increased in trend with celebrities such as Beyoncé setting an example of what it means to own and find empowerment, in one’s cultural identity. If you’re ready to grow out your afro and are navigating the best ways to take care of it, follow these three tips by renowned hairstylists specializing in afros.

Featured Photo from BET.com

Treat it Well

Our hairs’ natural oils take longer to absorb into curly hair, so it is important to keep your tresses moisturized to stop it from frizzing. There are various hair-products specifically for natural hair available on the market but the best oils to treat your hair with are usually the ones you already keep in your kitchen: coconut, olive, castor, jojoba, and avocado oil will work wonders on your hair.

These oils are extremely nourishing and inexpensive and will help you get your hair to look as though you have just walked out of the salon.

Wash your hair then follow up with a conditioner, letting it soak in for at least five minutes ensuring it reaches all the way down to the roots. Once you’re out of the shower, treat your hair with your moisturizing cream or oil of choice and let it soak into your hair, being careful not to use too much to avoid droopy, wet-looking curls.

Pump up the Volume

An afro should be voluminous and one of the best ways to ensure the full look is by braiding your hair prior to going to bed. This will ensure that your hair isn’t flattened while you sleep and will instead spring back into its voluminous form once your release it from its braids in the morning.

One of the most important things to keep a check on when it comes to afro-maintenance is your split ends. Schedule a standing appointment with your hairdresser to avoid skipping your monthly trim. Split ends will make it difficult for you to style your afro and will travel up to mid-length causing further damage to your hair.

Also, try to add some natural volume to your hair.

Invest in a Silk Headscarf

All that moisturizing care you have been putting into your natural hair will be for nothing if you don’t protect it with a silk headscarf or pillowcase while you sleep. Instead of your hair absorbing all the oily goodness, your pillow will and come morning, your afro will be back to a state of dry frizz. Wrapping your hair in a silk scarf before you go to sleep, will retain the moisture, allowing it to work its magic on your hair while you sleep. Your hair is also prone to more breakage during the night time as you are constantly moving against your pillow, the fabric of which can cause our hair to get caught and damaged. Wrapping your hair in a silk scarf or investing in a silk pillowcase, will protect it from breakage throughout the night and you will wake up to healthy-looking hair that is easy to comb.

Leave in or Rinse Out? Which Conditioner is Right for Your Hair?

When it comes to hair treatments the conditioner we choose can really impact not only how our hair holds a style but it’s overall health and appearance. Most people feel overwhelmed by the number of conditioners available. Do I leave in or rinse out? Which conditioner is right for my hair type? How long do I leave it in for? How much should I use? To help us crack the code on hair conditioners we connected with Maya Smith, International Master of Natural Curls and founder of The Doux®, a haircare line created specifically for naturally curly hair which includes The Fresh Rinse® conditioner.

Below are the most common questions about hair conditioners with awesome insights and tips from Maya, where she lends over 2 decades of hands-on experience as a stylist.

What are the benefits of a conditioner?

Conditioners help protects the hair from dryness and breakage by coating the hair shaft to help it retain moisture and softness. People tend to use it mainly for the added benefit of detangling hair, however, it’s important to choose a conditioner that won’t weigh your hair down.

What are the benefits of a rinse?

A rinse, unlike a conditioner, doesn’t coat the cuticle of the hair. A rinse has a much thinner consistency and is in actuality a detangler.

Do I use a leave-in conditioner or a conditioning rinse?

You can use both if your hair is dry, course, or color treated, however, fine hair or hair that tends to be porous should stick to conditioner only.

Should everyone with curly or kinky hair use a conditioner?

Yes. Conditioners help maintain the hair’s elasticity, or its ability to stretch and expand without breaking, which is essential for curly hair.

How long do I leave in a conditioning rinse?

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions start there. Every formula is different, so you want to be sure to use the product as directed to avoid under or over-conditioning. You can always leave it in a bit longer or switch to another conditioner specifically for the result you want to achieve.

What’s the best water temperature to use when rinsing it?

I prefer luke-warm to cool water because it helps the cuticle of the hair close during the rinse, which makes the hair shiny and sleek.

How much conditioner should be used for every inch of hair?

It depends on the density, or thickness of the hair. Again, follow the manufacturer’s directions on how much to apply. Many suggest the amount of a quarter however if hair is thinner or really thick you may need more or less.

What are some ingredients that can weigh hair down?

Oils and certain types of silicones can weigh hair down. However, some formulas include these ingredients intentionally, because of the smoothing effect that they create on the hair. This is why it’s important not to leave it in too long and to make sure to get it all out unless it’s a leave-in conditioner.

What ingredients should be avoided?

I’m not a fan of petroleum jelly or mineral oil. There’s a lot of controversy surrounding silicone, but what most people don’t know is that silicones get a really bad rap because they’re commonly associated with silicones found in products that aren’t made for your hair. Cosmetic-grade silicones like dimethicone actually create slip, protects the hair from breakage, and helps the hair shaft retain moisture during the styling process.

What about conditioners for color-treated hair?

Some ingredients can break down artificial pigment in the hair, causing it to fade, look dull, or turn brassy. Make sure that the label says that the product is color-safe. You certainly want to switch to products formulated for color-treated hair.

Can I dilute a regular conditioner with water and use it as a detangler?

You can, however, I recommend opting for a product that was intended to be a leave-in conditioner. This will help you avoid unnecessary build-up. Some people like to put a leave in conditioner mixed with water in a spray bottle and add it to their beach bag. After swimming they spray it in to make hair easier to comb through.

What are some mistakes people make when using a leave in or a rise out conditioner?

Over-conditioning is the most common mistake because too much coating on the hair can cause dryness, brittleness, and ultimately breakage. Make sure you’re not leaving a conditioner in longer than 3 minutes unless the manufacturer instructs you to do so.

THE STORY:

Get ready to “drop the mic” on the beauty aisles at Target stores this December. The Doux® (pronounced The Do) is a “new school” modern hair care system with an “old school edge.” With packaging that is bold and bright and product titles inspired by 90’s hip hop, The Doux is poised to kill it with those seeking a way to smoothing curly, kinky, and wavy hair into both, curly or straight styles.

Created by Maya Smith, a 25-year celebrity stylist and International Curl Master, The Doux was first launched in Europe in 2011 in response to her passion for helping people master the hair they were born with. STRAIGHT, NATURAL, CURLY, or RELAXED, according to The Doux, if you grew it, it’s ALL GOOD. “I was living in Germany at the time, had my own salon there and my specialty was helping clients to transition to a relaxer-free lifestyle. I’m obsessed with people maximizing the potential of the hair they were born with. Mastering curls is my passion and purpose,” explains Smith.

The people felt her passion through her products. The Doux blew up overseas so much so that it caught the attention of media in the USA. “Once we started getting press in the states the demand for The Doux was incredible. I had to return to the states and see this vision through,” Maya Smith explains. In 2014, Maya opened The DOUX Salon™ in Macon Georgia’s historic Downtown district and started selling her professional grade products at her salons and on-line.

Fast-forward three years and a lot of work and dedication, The Doux will arrive in Target stores, on Christmas Eve; no easy feat for an indie brand. “We are so excited to bring The Doux to the masses. It’s 20 years in the making. We listened to 20 years of feedback from actual clients from Minneapolis to Morocco. We listened to what people wanted, a salon grade, high quality product that delivered on its promises. Helping people to manage and maintain their natural hair and celebrate their own bold, unique style is what the last 25 years of my professional life has been about,” Maya Smith shares.

The Doux also redesigned its packaging, with the intention to disrupt the category. It’s bold with bright colors, which is the opposite of the more subdued look you see on the shelves currently. “I’m a fan of 90’s rap so I wanted to incorporate lyrics and titles in the packaging,” adds Smith. With titles such as Bonita Afro Balm, Mousse Def, Sucka Free, Fresh Rinse, and The Light, The Doux will most definitely catch the eyes of Millennials and Gen X’ers alike.

Vanity Planet shipped an amazing product, the Tame | Pro-Style Titanium Tourmaline Flat Iron. This flat-iron meets all of my professional needs with heat control, auto shut-off, and a flexible cord.  I enjoyed using the flat-iron to straighten my 4B hair and tame my natural edges.

About Vanity Planet:

Vanity Planet is a boutique marketplace, focused on beauty, grooming, and wellness. We’re more than your typical online store. We source, curate, and design products that benefit your life on the daily. Our approach is simple: amazing taste with minimal investment. Each item we carry is selected with intention and quality is never, ever sacrificed.

How does this product work?

1. Plug in Tame and hold down the start/stop button for 2 seconds to begin heating.

2. Use the “plus” (+) and “minus” (-) symbols to adjust until you reach desired temperature for use. Once reached, double click the start/stop button to lock the temperature setting. This will ensure that the temperature does not change accidentally during use. A red dot will appear on the digital screen to show that the temperature lock feature is in use.

3. Allow Tame to heat up, and then gently glide Tame through either damp or dry hair, spending only a few seconds on each section of hair.

4. Once finished, double click the start/stop button to release the temperature hold setting, then hold the start/stop button for 2 seconds to shut off the device.

5. Unplug it, and wait for it to cool, before storing Tame in a safe place.

DO NOT use Tame on synthetic hair. Do not use abrasive cleansers and chemicals to clean Tame. Make sure to clean the Tame plates after each use. Clean the plates when the device is turned off, unplugged, and cool, and use a slightly damp cloth to wipe it clean. Clean the handle at least once a week using a damp cloth (again, only when the device is turned off, unplugged, and cool). To unplug the device, pull on the plug, not the Tame cord.

FOR BEST RESULTS, we recommend washing hair before use. Towel dry and comb through thoroughly before styling.

Summer Solstice and Adventures

I wanted to make an effort (this summer) to get out and enjoy the sunlight.  After surviving the winter months and various inches of snow it was a relief to feel the heat on my skin.

I was dead set on venturing out in Tampa, Florida.  One thing I can’t resist is a great meal and wine tasting. The photo shown is from Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant. It’s an upscale working winery where customers can also become members. We decided to sit outside while viewing the palm trees and water fountain.

I am a fashion blogger and it’s a ritual to drop by shopping malls when visiting a new area.  International Plaza was no exception to my tradition. The fascinating concept about this particular center is the mixture of stores and Bay Street food court.  It’s an open-air village with restaurants; very exciting for night-life.  I’m also a people watcher and relish in the distinct styles (or fashion) for each region.

It’s no secret that my hair is natural.  I made the transition three years ago due to chemical damage on my edges.  Being natural is a personal preference because I am more health conscious.

Amongst my friends, I’m also known for changing my hair styles (often) and can be seen wearing accessories,  twist outs, extensions, or wigs.  After watching several Youtube videos I was finally able to accomplish a turban.  This was my favorite summer go-to style when I’m seeking a sleek look.
