NYFW RECAP: Katie Gallagher FW17 “Hallow”

Even now this landscape is assembling.

The hills darken. The oxen

sleep in their blue yoke,

the fields having been

picked clean, the sheaves

bound evenly and piled at the roadside

among cinquefoil, as the toothed moon rises:

This is the barrenness

of harvest or pestilence.

And the wife leaning out the window

with her hand extended, as in payment,

and the seeds

distinct, gold, callin

Come here

Come here, little one

And the soul creeps out of the tree.

Louise Glück, “All Hallows,” 1968

Set in New England during autumn, Katie Gallagher’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection, Hallow, finds inspiration in men’s military apparel, specifically the MA-1 bomber jacket. Developed in the 1940s, the bomber jacket provided warmth and safety to pilots during air combat in WWII.

In the decades following, the garment became one of the most identifiable pieces of military apparel, finding its way into popular culture by the end of the 20th century. Gallagher has featured iterations of the bomber jacket in many of her past collections, using tulle, lace, and other unlikely materials to create the traditionally heavy, masculine garment.

Like early bomber jackets that were lined in orange, Gallagher’s color palette will feature black and orange hues, which also recall the colors of autumn and death most commonly associated with All Hallow’s Eve.

Hallow relies heavily on textures and subtle details, featuring point d’esprit and tulle that form non-traditional, dainty, and triangular silhouettes. Materials include airy swiss dot paired with heavy opaque wool, silk, English tulle, Mountain Goat, lambskin, and pony fur leathers. Gallagher’s signature twisted seams finish turtleneck sleeves and leggings.

Hallow is Gallagher’s 16th collection. Gallagher’s past collections have been celebrated by Vogue, The Cut, Nylon, Glamour, Refinery 29, W Magazine and Teen Vogue, among others, for her attention to detail, superior craftsmanship, and creativity. She pulls inspiration from her childhood, music, art, and her life in New York City. More information is available at katiegallagher.com.

About Katie Gallagher – Eclipse SS17
Secretive, unknown, mysterious, Black, the darkest color yet the color with no color at all, represents both full absorption and complete absence of light, evil and elegance. Constantly inspired by this hue that has no hue, Katie Gallagher’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection, Eclipse, is her third all-black collection, followed by last season’s all black collection, Veiled and her initial collection, S/S 2010, Veil.
Gallagher’s current monochromatic collection relies on textures and subtle details, highlighting her obsessions with gothic architecture, Harry Clarke illustrations and traditional Catholic rituals and symbols. She complements these heavy themes with lightweight fabrics and whimsical embroidery.
Through Eclipse, Gallagher combines Swiss Dot sheer jackets with delicate lace and pony fur, English tulle skirts and tops feature embroidered hearts, dots and crosses. Gallagher pairs gathered, twisted seams with grosgrain ribbons and silver zippers, defining her SS17 collection.

About Katie Gallagher Veiled FW16
Secretive, unknown, mysterious. Black, the darkest color yet the color with no color at all, represents both full absorption and complete absence of light, evil and elegance, beginning and end, a completed cycle. Inspired by this hue that has no hue, Katie Gallagher’s FW 2016 collection, Veiled, is her second all-black collection.

Gallagher’s monochromatic collection relies heavily on textures and subtle details, featuring elements of gothic architecture, stained glass, and Harry Clarke illustrations. Recalling her initial and first all-black collection, Veil (SS 2010), Gallagher’s latest collection includes reworked pieces from SS 2010, completing her line’s cycle.

Through Veiled, Gallagher combines bold leather jackets and military-inspired trousers with delicate lace, cashmere rompers, and long slitted silk skirts. Stained glass-inspired lace textiles and hairpieces recall cathedral elements, graveyards, and old Catholic rituals. Gallagher pairs twisted seams and twill tape with velvet ribbons and zippers, defining her FW 2016 collection.

Veiled is Gallagher’s 14th collection showing during New York Fashion Week. In her past collections, she has been celebrated for her attention to detail, superior craftsmanship, and creativity. Gallagher pulls inspiration from her childhood, music and art, and her life in New York City.
