Three Top Tips For Building A Sustainable Wardrobe

Over the past few years, fast fashion has taken over the clothing industry. Instead of concentrating on well-made, long-lasting investment pieces, many popular retailers instead sell poorly constructed garments made from inferior synthetic materials for an extremely low cost. The design of these clothes is often trend-led, meaning that they quickly become dated after only a few seasons and are subsequently discarded. However, the toll that fast fashion is taking on the environment is quickly becoming evident, as well as the poor working conditions and wages of the people employed in making fast fashion clothing. If you would like to help in the fight against fast fashion, read on for three top tips for building a sustainable wardrobe.

  1. Buy second hand

Instead of buying into fast fashion, you could instead buy your clothing second hand. Do not let the fact that these clothes are pre-owned put you off – you don’t necessarily have to spend hours going through a smelly $1 sales rack at Goodwill (although you can find some gems here if you are willing to put in the work). If you know exactly what it is you are after, try searching for it on an online sales platform such as eBay. You can find some real bargains here, with a lot of clothes being either brand new or only worn a handful of times. Alternatively, you could look at specialist vintage clothing dealers, who will be able to provide you with a unique and sustainable piece of fashion history.

  1. Shop from ethical retailers

If you do decide to buy an item of clothing brand new, make sure you buy from an ethical retailer, such as yuniont.com. An ethical retailer will use fabric obtained through sustainable sources, such as recycled fabric, and have the items sewn in an ethical environment that pays workers fairly for their labor. They may also seek to reduce the air miles involved in producing the garment and avoid using materials that could potentially involve putting an animal through pain, such as angora. This information is often readily available on a sustainable retailer’s website so that customers have complete transparency about business practices and manufacturing methods.

  1. Create a classic capsule wardrobe

As much as fast fashion is trend-led, you could avoid this pitfall by creating a wardrobe based on classic pieces that will always look chic, rather than constantly chasing after the lastest trends. Garments such as a white t shirt, well-cut pair of jeans, and little black dress can be used to create many different looks suitable for any occasion; however, what garments you choose to include in your capsule wardrobe will depend on your own personal style – you might consider a leather jacket indispensable, whereas someone else might prefer a beige mac, for instance. Buy items that are well made and the best that you can afford on your budget. This way, you are unlikely to need to replace them after only a few wears.

GLOBAL FASHION AND BEAUTY FOUNDER RIHANNA AND RENOWNED ARTIST LORNA SIMPSON COLLABORATE FOR ESSENCE’S JANUARY+FEBRUARY 2021: THE ISSUE CELEBRATES VICE PRESIDENT-ELECT KAMALA HARRIS’ HISTORIC WIN

ESSENCE, the leading media, technology and commerce company serving Black women, kicks off 2021 with a stunning January + February cover art exclusive. Legendary artist Lorna Simpson collaborates with global fashion and beauty founder Robyn Rihanna Fenty (who recently launched Fenty Skin globally in stores in the U.S. and the U.K.) to reinterpret the narrative of modern-day beauty in the gorgeous photographic cover collage, Of Earth & Sky, and in images comprising a 12-page portfolio feature inside the January + February issue. Over the past 15 years of her acclaimed three-decade career, Simpson has created collages that recontextualize images of Black women from vintage pages of Ebony and Jet magazines. Like all of Simpson’s celebrated works, these original pieces are more than what meets the eye.

Simpson channels Rihanna as her muse throughout the spectacular artistic rendering—reimagining the artist in a way that has neverbeenseen before. Rihanna looks ethereal in designer piecesincluding from her signature Savage X Fenty line as well as Prada, Givenchy, Hood by Air, Thelma West, Rick Owens and more.Simpson states:“…I needed to create images of Rihanna to place within the environments of source materials from my archive. For the project to have the same kind of dramatic visual intensity as my collage work to date, I had to consider the atmosphere and lighting of specific source materials before arriving to set. Knowing Rihanna’s charisma and commanding presence, my effort was then to be as present and prepared as possible to capture her exquisite performance for the camera…”

The package also features the piece, Anthems of Possibility, written by Simpson’s daughter, writer and actor Zora Simpson Casebere. She weighs in on how Rihanna helped shape her womanhood at an early age and how serving as a stand-in model on set for her mother was a full-circle moment. She muses:“…At 13, I was deeply grateful that at a formative time in my life, it was Rihanna’s voice and art that became my portals to so many questions about sexuality, sexual exploration and sexual autonomy. Now, on set, I assisted my mother as a model as she explored how she might later place Rihanna within the visual contexts she’d selected from vintage Ebony magazines, old Associated Press photographs and 19th-century lithographs of mineral specimens. When Rihanna arrived at the set—my first time seeing her in real life—I was mesmerized. She was the very definition of grace, charisma and influence. Wearing a magnificent Maximilian black headdress, she requested the song ‘Thick’ by DJ Chose, then met the camera with power and possibility—power in how she moved her body through space, and possibility in how she dismantled and moved beyond institutional boundaries…”

The gorgeous issue will also pay homage to Vice-President Elect Kamala Harris’ historic win with reflections by five influential Black women: Donna Brazile, Leah Daughtry, Karen Finney, Star Jones and Minyon Moore. In addition, the issue features an interview with Barack Obama talking about his new book and journey as the nation’s first Black president. Plus, iconic actress Cicely Tyson shares an eye-opening excerpt from her new memoir.

ESSENCE.COM’S DIGITAL COVER FEATURES “SYLVIE’S LOVE” STARS TESSA THOMPSON + NNAMDI ASOMUGHA!

ESSENCE‘s newest digital cover features Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha, the stars of the movie, Sylvie’s Love. The two portray Sylvie and Robert–an aspiring producer and successful saxophonist in the 1960’s whose deep love never seems to be perfectly timed. The beautiful and sensual homage to Hollywood’s golden era by writer-director Eugene Ashe–set against the backdrop of both the civil rights and women’s rights movements–will begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video on December 23. In the ESSENCE digital cover story, Falling In (Sylvie’s) Love, Asomugha (who’s married to Kerry Washington) and Thompson talk to writer Joi-Marie McKenzie about:
  • NNAMDI ON SYLVIE AND ROBERT’S LOVE CHALLENGES: “None of it is simple. None of it is one-sided. Love and life are complex, no matter which lens you’re looking at it through…”
  • TESSA ON WHY THE TIMING OF “SYLVIE’S LOVE” COULDN’T BE SWEETER: “At a time when we’re talking about the value and dignity of Black life…it’s really great to have a [love] story that offers some escapism for audiences, and that feels sweeping and beautiful and hopeful about love. We really need those kinds of narratives…”
  • NNAMDI ON SHOWCASING BLACK MALE VULNERABILITY: “That was important for us to show, especially during that time when there was a hypermasculinity that said, ‘I’m immovable…'”
  • TESSA ON HOW SHE’S SIMILAR TO SYLVIE: Certainly women like Sylvie existed during the time, but those stories aren’t told…I’m in a period in my career, personally, where I’m launching my own production company. I’m working as a producer, and I… stand on the shoulders of women like Sylvie who came before me—career women who were [pioneers] in a time when it was hard enough to be that as a woman, never mind as a Black woman…”
  • WRITER-DIRECTOR EUGENE ASHE ON SYLVIE+ROBERT’S LIFE-CHANGING LOVE: “Even Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. still had a bunch of babies and fell in love…It’s really important to show that we existed in the past [beyond] the ‘struggle culture’—that Black folks were still falling in love. I think not showing that is a way of erasing us…”
In addition, ESSENCE will kick off its “Behind the Scenes Look on Sylvie’s Love” this Monday, 12/14, on ESSENCE STUDIOS. Join us for a series of conversations with the cast and crew of this incredible film throughout the week. For more on this digital cover story, visit ESSENCE.com. EMMY-WINNING ACTRESS+ACTIVIST ZENDAYA ON ESSENCE’S NOV/DEC COVER

Zendaya is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars – and one of Black Hollywood’s wildest dreams. At just 24 years old, the actress has led two successful series on two of the biggest networks in TV land; costarred in a huge blockbuster Marvel film; and become the youngest woman ever to win the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a drama, Euphoria. As much as the actress and activist has broken barriers in her past, it’s her present and future in Hollywood that’s winning.

For ESSENCE’s November + December issue, Zendaya graces the cover with stunning and picturesque black and white imagery that pays tribute to icons of the past while squarely establishing her as a leading force in the present and an icon of the future. The special issue is part of the brand’s ongoing 50th anniversary celebration and also features Zendaya on three bonus digital covers (with fashion styling and creative direction led by renowned celeb stylist Law Roach.) In her cover story, A Work of Art, Zendaya talks to writer Sylvia Obell about everything from her historic Emmy win, speaking truth to power and carrying our legacy forward. She tells ESSENCE:

ON WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH HER MIND RIGHT BEFORE HER HISTORIC EMMY WINNING: “There’s a video of me that a family friend took while I was waiting, and you can see my leg shaking. In my head I was like, ‘Dude, just chill out. What will be, will be.’ I remember taking a deep breath, and then hearing my name, and then my family screamed. I was worried that if they kept screaming for too long, I wouldn’t have any time to actually say anything—but I didn’t want to stop them, because they were having a great time. It was a very special night. I’ll definitely remember that one forever…”

ON RECEIVING SUPPORT FROM OTHER BLACK WOMEN AFTER HER EMMY WIN: “I’m honored to have that support, especially from my fellow young Black creatives. Through this Emmy’s period, especially, I felt a strong sense of support within our community, which I’m really grateful for. I think what’s slowly starting to happen is, artists like Issa Rae and Lena Waithe have created opportunities that have resulted in more of us being in these rooms. That’s such a special feeling, and I think it’s definitely changing the idea that there can only be “one at a time,” which is false. I love to see that genuine love and respect for each other’s work. I hope that we continue to expand that in all kinds of beautiful ways, because I think we’re on a really good path…”

ON LAW ROACH’S CREATIVE + FASHION DIRECTION: “I also felt very excited that ESSENCE allowed Law [Roach] and me to be a part of the creative team and do something a little bit different. I had so much fun on this shoot paying homage to Donyale Luna, the first Black supermodel. A lot of what I do, specifically within fashion, is a tribute to fashion icons who came before me—many of whom are Black women. I love the way it turned out. I’m very proud of it. It’s one of my favorite cover shoots I’ve ever done.”

ON FILMING “MALCOLM & MARIE” WHEN THE PANDEMIC FIRST SHUT DOWN: “It was a dream, because I’ve always wanted to be able to just strip everything away. I love what I do—and like most people, I was finding ways to stay inspired and stay creative, and luckily I know people who are the same way. It was great sitting in a room with John David Washington, Marcell Rév and Sam [Levinson], literally writing scenes as we went, coming up with ideas as we moved through the characters, and finding new things every day. That was the coolest part. That is why I do this.”

HER NEW YEAR’S WISH FOR BLACK WOMEN: “For us to continue to fully realize our power and harness it to do great things, because we are incredibly powerful. We’re often convinced that we’re not, and taught to shrink—but we have to believe in our collective power. I always think of that Beyoncé song, ‘They’ll never take my power, my power, my power.’ Let’s take that energy into the new year…”

ESSENCE’s November + December issue also includes a special Election 2020 package featuring a History Maker profile on Vice-President Elect Kamala Harris and her historic run for the White House. In the piece, News & Politics editor Tanya Christian details her year-plus coverage of the Senator—including her live appearance at the 2019 ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans during her presidential run. The issue also features The Black Women Behind the Biden-Harris Campaign, an article showcasing key movers and shakers who helped drive the campaign to victory.

Detoxification of Your Skin for Radiant Skin

You might have seen lots of blogs and articles on the importance of detoxification of body and skin. By detoxification of the skin, we mean cleaning our skin in such a way that it starts glowing and looking radiant. Detoxification removes dirt and toxins from our body which has a direct effect on our skin.

Featured Photo from Net-A-Porter

Unfortunately, lots of our personal choices result in damaging our skin such as smoking, not drinking enough water, not following a healthy diet plan, and lots of other things. Our skin is the largest organ of our body and when we don’t follow a healthy schedule, it is reflected on our skin. Therefore, you must pay attention to the detoxification of the skin. We are going to share some important things about detoxification of skin that you did not know before.

  1. Skin detoxification is a real thing:

Many people think that detoxification of skin means cleaning the surface of the skin with the help of scrubs, cleansers, and different other products. However, by detoxification we mean, cleaning kidneys and livers. Cleaning of skin only comes with how much you care for it. However, when you take different steps to detox the liver and kidney, you see the results on your face.

  1. Skin detox products help look skin radiant:

There are lots of skin detox products that work to help the skin get rid of toxins which are becoming the reason for blackheads, whiteheads, blemishes, etc. These products used for detoxification of the skin also balance the pH of the skin. If you are searching for a product to remove many types of imperfections from the skin, try La Clinica detox for skin that you can buy from

  1. Vitamin A supplement is best for detoxification:

All those products that claim to detox your skin usually contain the active ingredient of vitamin A. Vitamin A actually cleanses your skin and thus revitalizes it. The result of serums and creams rich in vitamin A is similar to the detoxification skins obtained when people drink green juice etc. to make their kidney and liver boost their performance and remove toxins from the body

  1. Detoxification does rebalancing of skin:

Rebalancing means repairing the skin so that it becomes completely free from imperfections in the form of fine lines, blemishes, dark circles, etc. The skin also becomes radiant when the repairing mechanism starts.

Rebalancing means purifying the skin from impurities so that the pores don’t clog and result in acne. It also means nourishing the skin by giving it all those products which are capable of repairing and rejuvenating the skin

The takeaway:

If you are looking for some health products that can detox your skin and make it look brighter than before, you should try to those products which can enhance the overall appearance of the skin and also enrich it with all the needed nutrients such as vitamin A. However, you also pay attention to your diet and daily routine.

What Are COVID-Safe Nose Accessories? Look Stylish and Mask-Friendly

We talk a lot about makeup and masks as the fashion world is trying to get to grip with safety measures. If you were a heavy makeup wearer, you’ve probably realized that your face mask and foundation are not made to work together. As a result, many makeup artists have come up with alternative solutions, such as creating an exciting and bold display using your eyes only. A quick search for #maskmakeup on Instagram can give you plenty of inspiration to get started.

Featured Photo from Harper’s Bazaar

However, your eyes are only one of the things you can play with. When you wear a mask, the upper third of half of your nose is exposed, depending on your mask’s size. In other words, there is plenty of room for a stylish nose accessory that is COVID-safe and mask-friendly.

Glasses are a no-brainer

They sit comfortably on your nose bridge, enhancing your eyes while bringing all the attention to a small area between your eyebrows and the bridge of your nose.

Two things every fashionista should remember about glasses during the pandemic:

Number one: Glasses will keep your eyes protected from moisture droplets, which contact lenses can’t do.

Number two: Glasses can be incredibly stylish. You can find designer pairs online that don’t break the bank and suit your face, as seen in a previous article on Style Life Fashion. It’s fair to say that contact lenses can’t compete with the fashion bonus you get from a quirky pair of glasses. The only thing you need to remember is to buy an antifog spray. The combination of face mask and eyewear can be unpleasant without the helpful spray!

In short, glasses keep you safe and stylish! What more can you ask for?

Get pierced just above your mask

As mentioned, your mask reaches above your nostril. This leaves your nose bridge visible, so why not make the most of it? You can easily research bridge piercing, learn more from Urban Body Jewelry, to find out if it is a style for you. In essence, your nose bridge is the smallest part of your nose just between your eyes. This is where you would rest your glasses if you had a pair. Contrary to common belief, you can wear glasses with a nose bridge piercing. However, experts recommend switching to contact lenses during the healing period.

Typically, a piercing in the area will show two small balls on each side of the bridge if you opt for a curved barbell item. But you can find other types of jewelry. Two shiny dots above your masks will turn a few heads!

An elegant cuff

Are you not sure about a piercing? You can experiment with a bridge cuff while you make up your mind. A nose cuff is a fake ring you place on the nose bridge. With no piercing required, it’s a playful item that lets you try out a new style without commitment. The nose bridge is one of the most understated areas. When you’re wearing a mask, the nose bridge is the only place where you can wear an item of jewelry that would stand out.

The advantage of a cuff is that you don’t have to worry about potential risks of infection. When you wear a mask, you create a warm pocket of air that makes a favorable terrain for skin bacteria spread. That’s what maskne is about! The nose bridge could get warm and sweaty, which would encourage rubbing or scratching. If you’re worried about touching your piercing with your fingers, a cuff is a safe option for now.

Fake rings

Now is not the best time to get a nose ring. If you have to wear a mask for an extended period, your nose piercing would be underneath the cover. Maskne, as mentioned, is a risk to take seriously with a new piercing. You don’t want acne to develop in the area as it could slow down the healing process. However, if you want to add a nose ring to add an accent when you remove the mask, a fake ring is a hygienic alternative.

Stay away from jewelry that extends beyond the mask

You might have been considering an intricate piercing project before the pandemic, such as a nose chain. A nose chain is typically a double piercing, nose, and ear, linked together with a chain. The chain could reduce the mask’s protection, causing the mask to be loose where the chain hangs. While risks are minimum, it’s best to stay on the safe side for now!

In conclusion, while we’re going to be wearing masks for the foreseeable future – finger crosses: not for long ! – you can have fun with nose accessories that create a COVID-safe style. With plenty of mask-friendly accessories, you have a variety of options to create a new look while wearing a mask.
