As a creative professional, I am often called into meetings that require a stylish flair. Long gone are the days of wearing the boring, basic black suit. In this day and age, women are seen wearing pink pencil skirts and vinyl pointy heels.
Back to the post! I was scheduled for a consultation and needed an upbeat look. One way to achieve a fashionable but yet professional outfit is to pair traditional clothing pieces with an on-trend pattern or accessory. For example, wear a striped blazer with a lace camisole.
In the look below, I’m wearing a leopard button-down blouse, high-waisted dress pants, and denim jacket. To elevate this outfit, I wore my favorite tassel earrings.
Style 101: Dress according to your individualized profession!
A few additional stylish business dress tips include:
Wear a wrap dress.
Select blazers in bold colors or neutral tones such as camel or red.
Purchase a crisp white shirt but select various styles such as puff sleeves.
Great professional accessories include wearing a logo belt or a vintage scarf.
Keep up with the time by wearing a statement watch.

Recently, I have shared several Instagram photos wearing a blanket scarf and coordinating accessories. Primarily because it’s very cold and blanket scarfs are a quick option to add a touch of chic to any outfit.
They’re inexpensive and layer over sweaters, button-down shirts, and cute dresses. I’ve also struggled with keeping my head warm and will quickly grab a leather hat.
Aside from the brisk weather we are embarking upon the New Year. This is the perfect time to re-evaluate goals, aspirations, and relationships whether it’s family or friends.
I have started to map out the direction of my personal and professional objectives. A few of my goals are volunteering and implementing new elements to my business.
I like to take goal setting a step forward by purchasing organizational tools that will keep me on track. What are your goals for the upcoming year? How do you re-evaluate and make changes?
Thrift shopping has become “the cool kids” way of updating their wardrobe and I have always adored thrifting. It’s one of my favorite hobbies since the age of 15 and allowed me to express my individual style.
My dad could never understand my obsession with consignment/thrift shops. He gave me money for clothing but instead of spending it at McCraes (which is now Belks) I would ask my mom to drive me to the thrift shop.
I think it was the experience of understanding clothing construction that attracted me to this hobby. In the process of shopping, I learned a lot about fabrics and fixtures. I also learned how to properly care for clothing because some items need to be dry cleaned while others required fabric softener.
Thankfully my mom never rejected my obsession because she also enjoys thrifting. To this day we call it “the closet” and when I visit my parents we turn this into a major event. For us, it’s a bonding activity and a perfect opportunity to neglect the budget planner for a little while, and still somehow save money!
I do recognize that thrifting’s not for everyone but I think it’s about strategy. There’s an art to thrifting that many may not understand and some of us have the true knack of finding a good deal. I want to help those who may not understand how to thrift and share in this experience.
Step Number One: I read fashion magazines like Instyle or People StyleWatch to recognize what’s fashionable for the season. When I’m shopping, I will instantly gravitate towards that trendy pair of white seersucker pants hanging on the rack.
Step Number Two: Know your body type before shopping consignment/thrift stores. Entering a thrift store can be overwhelming because there’s so much merchandise. You want to select items that compliment your figure and NOT because it’s a designer blouse. Nothing’s worse than paying $12 dollars for something that doesn’t work and you can NOT take back to the store.
Step Number Three: Search for quality fabrics or what I like to call (this is my fashion degree moment) natural fibers. They tend to hold up well in the course of wearing and look chic.
Step Number Four: Always, Always, Always, Always, overlook the garment. Do not purchase anything without searching the garment from top to bottom. For example, if you have a blazer in your basket search the pockets for tears, look at the buttons to see if one’s missing, or whether there’s a hole in the fabric. This is a very important step to thrifting.
Step Number Five: This may come as a surprise but thrift shops actually have sale days. Check with the sales associates or look around the store for sales. Also, keep up with the store discounts; for example, if a ticket has a red sticker your item could be 50% off.
You’re probably asking what type of items have I found while thrifting? Well, you’ve actually seen a few of the items on this site but I’ve purchased a fur coat (my first one in graduate school) Louis Vuitton wallet, Ralph Lauren sweaters, BCBG pumps, vintage sunglasses and clutch purses, denim jeans, wool plaid swing coat (my favorite in college) knee boots, and the list goes on!
Nothing says “chic” better than mixing vintage couture and fabulous accessories.
We own them, we love them, and we spend a great deal of money on them….handbags! There’s so many stylish bags for our personal collection such as tote bags, satchels, clutches, hobo bags, and weekender bags.

I have an obsession with handbags because they’re a great organizational tool. When my handbag’s properly sorted I feel like I can conquer the world. Although we may own several handbags (in various shapes and colors) are we caring for them properly?
As fashionistas, we stick our handbags in a closet once the seasons change. We forget to handle the outer leather, straps, and interior with care.
Tips to properly care for your handbag collection:
1. Know the material of your handbag prior to using chemicals or solutions.
2. Always store your handbag in a pillow case or protective cloth.
3. Don’t forget to zip or fasten the bag; and put the straps together.
4. Purchase a leather or suede protector for your handbags.
5. Repairs can be done by your local seamstress or purse repair shop.
6. Handbags should be moisturized with a leather conditioner.
7. Insert bubble wrap or tissue paper to help your bag keep it’s shape and form.
8. Use a spray protector for weatherproofing handbags against environmental debris.
9. Let spills dry naturally inside of the bag.
10. Remember to also care for the hardware on your handbag.
If you switch handbags often, consider purchasing a handbag organizer to keep important items in tack. You never have to worry about packing your favorite lipstick or nail file ever again.
On Monday night, we will celebrate the new year with some fun, festive activities! But whether you’re attending a gala or having a movie marathon at your home, we should strive to look fashionable while sipping our glass of champagne.
If you’re battling with the question, “what should I wear” why not find fashion inspiration from a few celebrities that “get it right” for every occasion.
And as we review our favorite fashion looks of the year, how can we forget Rihanna’s blonde hair, Kim Kardashian’s black mesh dress, or Jessica Biel’s black, Louis Vuitton pump. In my opinion, the celebrities gave us “great fashion” for the 2012 year!
Over the past year I have taken a break from fashion blogging because I gave birth to my second son. Since that time, I have managed to return back to my pre – preggers clothing with some hard work and dedication.
But aside from living a healthy lifestyle, one of the key elements for looking fantastic after any MAJOR life change is by complimenting your figure. In simple terms, I have mastered how to create body illusions with lines, color, and texture.
Prior to my blogging life, I was also a fashion merchandising teacher. I have decided to share some information (used from a lesson plan) that can benefit any fashionista.
Enhance Your Style
{Alicia Keys wearing Vertical Lines}
1. Vertical Lines make you look taller and thinner.
2. Horizontal Lines make you look shorter and rounder.
3. Shiny Textures add weight; while smoother textures help you to look smaller {don’t forget to consider where this texture will be worn.}
4. Clothing Accessories should be in proportion to the body. Example, a petite woman should never carry a handbag that’s half her size! Never!
5. Create rhythm with colors, trims, and designs that will help pull the eye to areas that are most attractive.
6. Place emphasis on your BEST features!

With those tips, you are guarenteed to be gorgeous for any occasion.
