New Orleans Fashion Week Featuring Stevie Boi, Kids Runway Spotlight, and The Evolution of Fashion 300 Tricentennial Event

Today, New Orleans Fashion Week (NOFW) announces its 2018 schedule of events. The exclusive affair is slated to deliver its audience an exciting program with authentic New Orleans flair that artistically connects fashion, culture, art, history and more.

Since its inception in 2011, NOFW has been setting the stage for style along the Gulf Coast by ushering in the Southern region’s premier fashion tastemakers. The weeklong event aims to establish a strong awareness of local designers, models and beauty artisans, as well as to increase economic growth by creating a sustainable fashion community. This year, as the city celebrates its Tricentennial, NOFW will add an element of history to its body of work by presenting “300 Years of Fashion in New Orleans,” an event dedicated to highlighting the evolution of fashion in the region.

“In New Orleans we take great pride in our diverse culture and heritage, and that plays such a big part in the fashion scene,” said NOFW founder Tracee Dundas. “The fashion industry is inspired and motivated by the unique cultural attributes of our city. We are so excited to incorporate select iconic traditions that lend to the evolution of fashion, not only in New Orleans, but around the world.”

Each year, NOFW strives to bring attention to the Southern fashion community using this event as the catalyst of brand exposure, industry education, and resource sharing. NOFW attendees can expect to see a diverse range of fashion from local and internationally known designers including the accomplished talent, Stevie Boi.
New Orleans Fashion Week Schedule of Events:
Sunday, March 18: Let’s Talk Fashion
Monday, March 19: Beauty and the Ritz ft. Stevie Boi
Tuesday, March 20: The Evolution of Fashion, an official NOLA 300 Tricentennial event
Wednesday, March 21: Kids Runway Spotlight
Thursday, March 22 – Saturday, March 24: New Orleans Fashion Week Runway Shows

Mimi Holaday, Designer and Milliner at Halo Mimi said, “New Orleans Fashion Week is a great networking experience and tool for anyone in the fashion and beauty world. The event is the culmination of emerging and existing Southern talent – from designers of all types and hair and makeup artists to amazing photographers and young aspiring models.”

This year, New Orleans Fashion Week is partnering with New Orleans Entrepreneur Week to add a fashion pitch component to the Top Design Competition. “Fashion designers are creative individuals with a natural entrepreneurial spirit,” said Dundas. “The ten Top Design Competition finalists will have the opportunity to compete their collections on the NOFW runway, as well as further their business goals by taking their concept from the runway to retail.”

NOFW has seamlessly elevated the brands of Gulf Coast designers with runway shows, presentations, and events infused with New Orleans culture. In its eighth year, NOFW promises to deliver world-class couture, connect designers with opportunities and impress event attendees with fashion-forward designs, while paying homage to a city renowned and celebrated for its unique, eclectic style.

Get The Look: Rita Ora at the 2018 Grammys

Celebrity Makeup Artist Kathy Jeung worked with Rita Ora for tonight’s Grammy Awards – below is a breakdown of the look!

Who: Rita Ora at the 2018 Grammy Awards

The Inspiration: With the classic shape of Ralph & Russo dress, Kathy wanted to keep the focus on Rita’s complexion and eyes – giving her skin a satin finish with a touch of radiance and highlighter to accentuate Rita’s bone structure, and a simple glossy eye with lashes that lift the outer corners.

How to Get the Look:

Lips
Kathy applied Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colour in Plum This Go to give Rita a dark, bold lip.

Skin
Kathy applied Rimmel London Lasting Finish Breathable Primer all over Rita’s cleansed, toned and moisturized face to keep makeup fresh and long-lasting, creating a smooth, pore minimized canvas for makeup. She then applied Rimmel London #Insta Conceal & Correct underneath Rita’s eyes, erasing dark circles. Next, Kathy applied Rimmel London Match Perfection Concealer in Light/Medium with her ring finger, in a tapping motion underneath the eyes to blend into the rest of Rita’s face. Kathy mixed Rimmel London Lasting Finish 25HR Foundation in 303 True Nude with small amount of Rimmel London Good to Glow Highlighter in 003 Soho Glow to give her skin luminosity, by applying it with a flat foundation brush in broad strokes over Rita’s face, and blended with a damp sponge, giving Rita a natural looking finish. Kathy set the foundation with Rimmel London’s #Insta Fix & Matte Translucent Powder, helping to keep Rita’s forehead, sides of the nose and cheeks shine-free.

Cheeks
Kathy used Rimmel London Kate Moss Sculpting & Highlighting Kit in Golden Sands to highlight the tops of Rita’s cheekbones, above her jawline and down the length of her nose. She contoured the hollows under her cheekbones, just under her jawbone and under her chin using a narrow wedge brush and applied the blush using a rounded brush on the apples of her cheeks and extended towards temples.

Kathy finished up the cheeks by using Rimmel London’s Insta Duo Contour Stick to highlight along the tops of the cheekbones and blend with a damp sponge.

Eyes
Kathy applied the beige shade of the Rimmel London Magnif’Eyes Shadow Contouring Palette Blush Edition to the browbone and blended the matte taupe color into the crease. Then she applied Rimmel London’s ScandalEyes Eyeshadow Stick in Witness White to the inner corners of Rita’s eyes and blended for a trace of highlight. She then added Rimmel London Oh My Gloss in Clear to Rita’s eyelids to add a glossy, high shine. She lined Rita’s eyes using Rimmel London ScandalEyes Precision Micro Eyeliner in Black to create a very narrow wing along the lashline. To finish the eyes, she applied two coats of Rimmel London Shake It Fresh Mascara in Black to the upper lashes only to lengthen and thicken Rita’s lashes.

Brows
Kathy used Rimmel London Professional Eyebrow Pencil to fill in and extend Rita’s brow shape, followed by Rimmel London Brow This Way Brow Pomade in Medium to softly add color and keep the brow hairs in place. She finished the brows by applying Rimmel London Brow This Way Highlighting Pencil to lift the arches of the brow and add highlight to the brow bone.

Get The Look: Janelle Monae at the 2018 Grammys

Makeup artist, Jessica Smalls got Janelle Monae got rockstar ready for the Grammy’s using Kiehl’s, Buxom Cosmetics, and Eylure Lashes.

INSPIRATION:  “I wanted to give Janelle a timeless and current look at the same time, so I decided to give her a Twiggy 2018 vibe.”

“I wanted Janelle’s skin to shine like the star that she is, so we began prepping her skin the night before Grammys with Kiehl’s Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Mask to help brighten her skin’s appearance. When I arrived to Janelle the next morning, she was already glowing, but I decided to take the glow to the next level by giving her a light 5-minute steam, and then massaging Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate all over her face and along her neck, followed by Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream. I then applied Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado around her eyes, using my ring finger, to keep that delicate area moisturized.”

“For a bold and sexy eye look, I applied Buxom Cosmetics Eyeshadow Bar Single Eyeshadow in shades Lingerie Lover, Haute Couture and LBD to her crease, using a soft blending brush. The powerfully-pigmented formula glides onto lids with a luxe, powder-to-silk feel. I then lined her waterline with Buxom Cosmetics Hold The Line Waterproof Eyeliner in shade Ring My Bell and swept the Buxom Cosmetics Eyeshadow Bar Single Eyeshadow in shade Twilight Tryst on top to make the green pop. I finished with Eylure Luxe Silk “Trillion” false lashes and then applied a few individual lashes on the bottom for a “Twiggy” effect. To complete the look, I used Buxom Cosmetics Big Tease Plumping Mascara for instantly plumped, longer lashes.”

“Giving the moisturizer plenty of time to penetrate the skin, I then applied a pore minimizing primer all over her face using a synthetic brush. I then mixed Buxom Cosmetics Show Some Skin Weightless Foundation in shade In the Dark with the Buxom Cosmetics Divine Goddess Luminizer and using a damp sponge I applied all over Janelle’s face, starting by her nose and blending upwards and outwards. Using my ring finger, I sparingly dabbed some Concealer under her eyes to brighten. I contoured her face, focusing on her cheeks, temples and forehead with Buxom Cosmetics Hot Escapes Bronzer in shade Maldives, which gives off the perfect sun-kissed color and flatters all skin tones. And to complete her face I applied a soft pink to the apples of her cheeks, with some Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream on top for a subtle glow.”

“Now that her eyes and skin are finished, I hydrated her lips with Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1, and filled them in slightly with the all-in-one plumping lip liner, Buxom Cosmetics Plumpline Lip Liner in shade Stealth. I finished the look with the ultimate plumping lip gloss, Buxom Cosmetics Full-On Lip Polish in shade Megan. The high-shine gloss tingles for a lusciously soft and seriously sexy pout. And a stunning red carpet look was born!”

Get The Red Carpet Look At A Red Ticket Price: NAACP Image Awards Issa Rae, Halle Berry, Laverne Cox and More

We only get a few opportunities to make a statement with our look.  Sure, the world’s a catwalk and when you carefully plan your ensemble before stepping out to work or play, you never know who you’ll dazzle, but let’s be real here.

Featured Photo and Images from People Style

A special occasion demands a special look. Whether it’s a prom, a wedding, a friend’s birthday or some other gala event.  What’s a girl to do when she needs to create a red carpet look but only has the budget to shop red ticket prices?

Fear not, an ensemble can be dazzling without going bankrupt. With a little time, effort and research you can make substantial savings on every look…

Hair

We all know that a dazzling look starts with the hair. But we also know how expensive great hair care can be. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be. If the occasion calls for a stylist you may be able to save a fortune by getting your usual stylist’s apprentice to approach your hair. They’ll be fully supervised and will be able to create a gorgeous look either for free or a fraction of the price.

Makeup

Every girl needs a healthy array of pallets, glosses, foundations, and mascaras to make sure she turns heads. If your stores are running low, however, you needn’t max out your credit card trying to replenish them. Check out these hacks for getting the last few drops out of seemingly empty mascara and lip-gloss containers. You can even hit the high street and stock up on samples. Nobody’s going to judge you!

Dress

This is the big one. Your dress will be the centerpiece of your look. But who has thousands of dollars spare for a dress that will truly drop jaws? The good news is that there is a multitude of cheaper dresses that are indistinguishable from the big brands. Check out the selection at JVN prom dresses and tell me they don’t stack up with the best on the market. If you absolutely have to wear designer labels you’d be amazed at what you can find on eBay or online stores that specialize in last season’s lines.

Shoes

You have a pair of shoes that are just perfect for the occasion, but closer inspection reveals that they’re a little worse for wear. They’ll need to be replaced right? Wrong! For just a few bucks you can get those babies re-heeled with a little loose fabric or other embellishments. There, good as new!

5 Tips on How to Buy Makeup Online Safely

Chances are you’re managing much of your life online. You’re looking up restaurant reviews, getting tickets to shows, shopping for clothes and keeping up with your friends—all on your smartphone. If you have yet to consider getting your makeup that way too, it’s very doable—if you know how to buy makeup online safely. Yes, there are a number of things to take into consideration, but here’s how to make sure you get what you need in the safest way possible.

  1. Stick with Proven Brands (at First)

Chances are, you’re already buying your lipstick from one maker, your eye shadow from another company and your moisturizers from yet another manufacturer. Stick with those brands and try buying online instead going into stores. Staying with a proven commodity makes it easier for you to predict how products and colors will work on your skin. It also makes it easier to spot fakes because you know exactly what the real deal is supposed to look, smell and feel like. Once you get comfortable buying this way, you can branch out.

Featured Photo from The Coveteur

  1. Try It Before You Buy It

People selling makeup online are well aware of the fact you need to try makeup before you’re ready to commit to it. This is why they offer samples of new product for free with purchases. You can also get free testers, if you’re willing to cover the cost of shipping them to you. In many cases, this will cost less than driving to your local mall. Plus, you have the advantage of trying it out at home, instead of inside a crowded store with onlookers. Additionally, you won’t have a commissioned salesperson encouraging you to buy something you might not need because they get paid to move product.

  1. Shop Only with Sellers Who Accept Returns

Independent makeup merchants who sell cosmetics from home know they are at a decided disadvantage compared to physical cosmetics stores and bigger sites. To compensate, they will usually offer generous return polices. That way, if a product doesn’t work for you, it can be exchanged for something with the potential to be more effective—or refunded. Before buying makeup from an online store, read its return policy to make sure you can send back anything you don’t like.

  1. Look for Sites with Tutorials and Professional Tips

Yes, you can go to the makeup counter in your local department store and get a full makeover from a makeup artist. But that’s time consuming and there’s no guarantee you’ll want to walk around for the rest of the day wearing the end result. If you follow a video tutorial at home, you can play around in private and choose whether to let the rest of the world see your new look. Plus, you can learn how to do it yourself, step-by-step. That way, you can repeat the process on your own, without spending another hour in the chair—after going out of your way to get there.

  1. Buy Only New, Never Opened

Buying used makeup is a bad idea for a number of reasons. Best case, it could be past its expiration date. Worst case, it could be teeming with bacteria and/or viruses. This is particularly true for mascara, eyeliner and eye shadow, as the eyes are highly susceptible to infection. Similarly, used lipstick could be infected with the cold sore virus. Always insist upon new, unopened product and check the expiration date to be sure it is fresh. If it looks like it has been used, resealed, or repackaged when it arrives, send it back, get a refund and find a new seller.
