This Thanksgiving will be anything but traditional, from the guest list to menu planning. Many people have decided that this is the year to stray from pumpkin and pecan pies and try out something completely new for Thanksgiving dessert!

Holiday Prep and Onecklace Gift-Giving

The holiday season is right upon us.  I don’t know about you but there are specific details that need to be checked off the list in preparation for seasonal celebrations.

In previous years, I would take down the decorations and get straight to work.  This isn’t ideal because I would enter the new year with frozen meals and closets filled with miscellaneous items.  Thankfully, I learned from my unorganized ways and began to structure my home to truly ti’s the season.

#4 Lessons for Holiday Prep:

Lesson #1: Start de-cluttering before the new year. This is not up for debate!  If you wait until after Christmas, this will include gifts and leftover household items.

Lesson #2:  Clean the freezer prior to Thanksgiving.  This simple task will make room for extra food and potential freezer meals.  The holiday season can get busy, having freezer meals on hand eliminates the question, “What’s for dinner?”

Lesson #3:  Put up the Christmas tree prior to holiday festivities.  The longer you wait, the more stressful the holiday season will become.  I like to gather my entirefamily and pull down the tree at least two weeks before cooking the turkey.

Lesson #4:  The previous lesson leads me into the next one.  If the month of November is your busiest season in business or civic engagments, consider ordering the turkey.  There are several delicious options and this can be a time-saver (and energy-saver.)

Oh, in terms of gift-giving, check out oNecklace for one of a kind, personalized pieces.

The Sideways Letter Necklace and Bow Ring has been a elegant addition to my jewelry collection.  Both of the pieces are timeless.

What are some personalized gifts that you will be giving this year?

EMMY-WINNING ACTRESS+ACTIVIST ZENDAYA ON ESSENCE’S NOV/DEC COVER

Zendaya is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars – and one of Black Hollywood’s wildest dreams. At just 24 years old, the actress has led two successful series on two of the biggest networks in TV land; costarred in a huge blockbuster Marvel film; and become the youngest woman ever to win the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a drama, Euphoria. As much as the actress and activist has broken barriers in her past, it’s her present and future in Hollywood that’s winning.

For ESSENCE’s November + December issue, Zendaya graces the cover with stunning and picturesque black and white imagery that pays tribute to icons of the past while squarely establishing her as a leading force in the present and an icon of the future. The special issue is part of the brand’s ongoing 50th anniversary celebration and also features Zendaya on three bonus digital covers (with fashion styling and creative direction led by renowned celeb stylist Law Roach.) In her cover story, A Work of Art, Zendaya talks to writer Sylvia Obell about everything from her historic Emmy win, speaking truth to power and carrying our legacy forward. She tells ESSENCE:

ON WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH HER MIND RIGHT BEFORE HER HISTORIC EMMY WINNING: “There’s a video of me that a family friend took while I was waiting, and you can see my leg shaking. In my head I was like, ‘Dude, just chill out. What will be, will be.’ I remember taking a deep breath, and then hearing my name, and then my family screamed. I was worried that if they kept screaming for too long, I wouldn’t have any time to actually say anything—but I didn’t want to stop them, because they were having a great time. It was a very special night. I’ll definitely remember that one forever…”

ON RECEIVING SUPPORT FROM OTHER BLACK WOMEN AFTER HER EMMY WIN: “I’m honored to have that support, especially from my fellow young Black creatives. Through this Emmy’s period, especially, I felt a strong sense of support within our community, which I’m really grateful for. I think what’s slowly starting to happen is, artists like Issa Rae and Lena Waithe have created opportunities that have resulted in more of us being in these rooms. That’s such a special feeling, and I think it’s definitely changing the idea that there can only be “one at a time,” which is false. I love to see that genuine love and respect for each other’s work. I hope that we continue to expand that in all kinds of beautiful ways, because I think we’re on a really good path…”

ON LAW ROACH’S CREATIVE + FASHION DIRECTION: “I also felt very excited that ESSENCE allowed Law [Roach] and me to be a part of the creative team and do something a little bit different. I had so much fun on this shoot paying homage to Donyale Luna, the first Black supermodel. A lot of what I do, specifically within fashion, is a tribute to fashion icons who came before me—many of whom are Black women. I love the way it turned out. I’m very proud of it. It’s one of my favorite cover shoots I’ve ever done.”

ON FILMING “MALCOLM & MARIE” WHEN THE PANDEMIC FIRST SHUT DOWN: “It was a dream, because I’ve always wanted to be able to just strip everything away. I love what I do—and like most people, I was finding ways to stay inspired and stay creative, and luckily I know people who are the same way. It was great sitting in a room with John David Washington, Marcell Rév and Sam [Levinson], literally writing scenes as we went, coming up with ideas as we moved through the characters, and finding new things every day. That was the coolest part. That is why I do this.”

HER NEW YEAR’S WISH FOR BLACK WOMEN: “For us to continue to fully realize our power and harness it to do great things, because we are incredibly powerful. We’re often convinced that we’re not, and taught to shrink—but we have to believe in our collective power. I always think of that Beyoncé song, ‘They’ll never take my power, my power, my power.’ Let’s take that energy into the new year…”

ESSENCE’s November + December issue also includes a special Election 2020 package featuring a History Maker profile on Vice-President Elect Kamala Harris and her historic run for the White House. In the piece, News & Politics editor Tanya Christian details her year-plus coverage of the Senator—including her live appearance at the 2019 ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans during her presidential run. The issue also features The Black Women Behind the Biden-Harris Campaign, an article showcasing key movers and shakers who helped drive the campaign to victory.

ESSENCE’s November + December issue hits newsstands on November 24th. For more on this issue, visit ESSENCE.com. (Photo, AB+DM) Also join the conversation @Essence.

Aim High With Style Expert Sydney Sadick: 5 Different Ways To Wear Black Leggings This Fall

As a national TV correspondent (TODAY, E!, Inside Edition), fashion editor and style expert, NYC it girl Sydney Sadick has perfected the art of dressing for the part you want in life. In her new book Aim High: How to Style Your Life and Achieve Your Goals, Sydney shares her ethos on how to live fearlessly, achieve your dreams, and use fashion as a tool to ignite goal-getting confidence.

Not even a pandemic can stop her; as the nation-wide quarantine halted her industry, Sydney launched the ‘Lunchtime with Sydney’ Instagram Live show where 125,000+ viewers tune in weekly to watch her interview fashion and beauty icons like Bobbi Brown, Steve Madden, Lele Sadoughi, Alana Hadid, and some of today’s hottest reality celebrities.

The art of pivoting is just one of the many tricks Sydney has picked up over the years that drives her success. Now, she shares her story in her book to help others find their inner voice/style (and look fabulous in the process).

Black leggings are essential to our quarantine wardrobes this fall. They’re comfortable, look great on all women of any age and body type, and are the perfect canvas for dressing up or down. Here are 5 different ways I suggest wearing them.

1. Zoom Meetings: Make a statement in the upper portion of your outfit since this is where people will be seeing you. A puff-shoulder cardigan or a blazer in a flexible fabric with a bodysuit or t-shirt underneath paired with a gold hoop earring a bold lip will give your favorite bottoms a professional upgrade.

2. Socially-Distanced Lunch: If you’re meeting a friend for a socially distanced lunch outside you want to make sure you’re dressed warm! This is where layering comes into play. Pair your leggings first with a t-shirt, then a chunky knit sweater in a fall–approved color (deep burgundy, forest green), and a chic puffer coat. A pair of biker boots is also a fun way to add a little edge to your chilly-weather outfit. Your leggings allow you to mix textures, colors, and patterns, so have fun with it.

3. Comfy and Cozy: Netflix and chill calls for leggings and hoodies. Tie-dye is here to stay but in fall colors. Throw it on with your pair of leggings and a furry slipper and you’ll still look put together even if you have no plans on moving

4. Virtual Date: You don’t want to look like you tried too hard, but you still want to look put together. Your leggings will complement any top. Show off a little skin with an off the shoulder top paired with a chain choker necklace. It’s not too much but just enough.

5. At-Home Workout: Pair your leggings to a fun graphic t-shirt or colorful sports bra with a zip-up hoodie over it. The way you dress affects your mood so even bringing out some color to your leggings will make you a little more motivated to head to that online workout class.
