Age-Old Lingerie Myths Debunked

Age-Old Lingerie Myths Debunked

Lingerie, particularly bras, are a woman’s wardrobe staple and also one of the most challenging pieces to buy. You want to find something that is comfortable, supportive, and pretty. It also needs to fit into your personal needs from exercise to a night out. And the hardest part just might be finding your correct size! Below are some of the most common myths and what you really need to know when building a lingerie wardrobe.

MYTH: It’s okay not to wear a bra at all

This is a somewhat controversial topic, but most experts will agree that it’s a good idea to wear a bra. A bra offers support and can take off the strain on your back and overall posture. If the root of not wanting to wear a bra is comfort, look for a soft yet supportive style like a bralette or one of the many wire free options.

MYTH: Straps provide all of a bra’s support

This is a big misconception and completely false. The majority of a bra’s support should come from the band and not the straps. If your bra is uncomfortable because the straps are sliding off or are digging into your shoulders, go down a band size and up a cup size or even two. For plus size women, consider wider bra straps with padding which can offer a combination of comfort and additional support.

MYTH: Finding your right size bra is complicated

Here are four things to keep in mind. 1) don’t get hung up on a size 2) understand that different brands fit differently, even when marked as the same size 3) learn how to measure yourself or make an appointment with a bra fitter 4) you can also buy a few sizes and styles online and try them on at home. Finding your right size bra is not that complicated, but it might require some patience. When trying on a bra, make sure that you try it on with a t-shirt so that you can see if you get the shape that you really want.

MYTH: Never wash your bra in the laundry machine

While some may recommend hand washing your lingerie, you can put your bras in the laundry provided that you do so carefully. Use a lingerie bag and make sure that you close the bra so that the hooks don’t catch on anything. Never put your bra in the dryer since heat will harm the spandex or other stretch fiber.

MYTH: Shopping for sustainable fabrics is challenging

For several years, there has been a big trend in shoppers wanting products that are earth friendly and responsibly made. Likely, this trend will continue as more products become available and prices are closer to what consumers are used to paying. Dora Lau, founder and CEO of Dora L International, a global sourcing and design company says, “the interest in sustainable products is part of the growing wellness trend. Woman are seeking products that are good for themselves as well as the environment. Purchases are more mindful and take into consideration how we feel about the brand and it’s social responsibility.” Lau says that great strides have been made with fabrics created from Bamboo, like Lenzing Modal and Tencel.

Bra Fitting: How To Guide

If you’re in the market for a new piece of lingerie, be it out of necessity or just a pure want, there are some things you need to know before offering up your credit card. As any woman who has ever bought a bra knows, they’re one of the most difficult items to properly size yourself. It is possible though, if you abide by a few guidelines. Below are a few tips that can ensure that you’re know the best bra fitting possible before that trip to the store.

The Cup

Your bra cups should be big enough to ensure there’s not any spillage at the bottom, over the bra strap, or on the sides. However, your breasts shouldn’t be swimming inside the cups either.

You can get a general idea of what size you should be looking for by following the fruit method. As explained by Adam and Eve, the letter of your lingerie is your cup size: A, B, C, D, and so on. Check below to find what piece of fruit your breast mirror most to find out which cup size you should be looking for.

Plum—AA or smaller

Lemon—A

Orange—B

Grapefruit—C

Melons—D

The Straps

Your bra straps are just as crucial to the integrity of your lingerie as anything else. In addition to the band and underwire, the straps help keep your chest supported and, more importantly, your bra in place.

Probably the most tell-tale sign that your bra isn’t fitting right is that your straps are sliding off your shoulders. The solution could be as simple as shortening them, but if they’re as tight as they go, you might need a replacement.

There isn’t an exact strap size you should look for in your next bra. But according to Cosmopolitan, as a rule of thumb, the larger the breasts the wider your straps should be. You also should make sure they’re not cutting into your shoulders. If they are, it means your underwire and band aren’t taking on the amount of support they should be.

The Band

Finally, your band needs to be tight, but not uncomfortably.  Fresh Pair states that 90 percent of your bra’s support should be achieved from a snug, well-fitting band. You should be able to fit one to two fingers underneath it, and it should sit level around your body from front to pack. As Fresh Pair notes: “If it rides up your back, it’s too big. If your straps are falling, it’s too loose.”

Finding a properly fitting piece of lingerie can make you feel beautiful, confident, and fully supported whether you’re hanging out at home or painting the town red. Just follow these tips before hitting the shops.

Tomima Edmark, founder of HerRoom.com Interview

What was your source of inspiration for helping women to find the right bra? So many sources. Seeing beautiful women with unsupported bustlines – knew I could make them look thinner and better. Reading many of our emails with women complaining how their bra fit and I knew with a little education they could solve their problem(s) and look better. My general nature to want to help people – when I know something I instantly want to share and help others

Can you name three (of the best) retailers in terms of purchasing new bras? And why? That’s a loaded question. You need to explain to me why I would do this? I think HerRoom is the best.

How was your experience when working with Oprah? Oprah had a very well-oiled operation when I was involved and on her show. Actually, did not meet her till just before the show was being taped. However, she was very gracious afterwards, and with bodyguards flanking her, she stayed and took questions from guests and audience members. Having been on several talk shows, this is extremely rare to have that kind of access.

Give us a few additional tips in terms of selecting the appropriate bra to wear (according to your breast type.). Women need to look very closely at the center panel of their bras and the placement of the straps and where they are attached. For example, if you have a high tummy, your center panel should have an arched center panel to help your bra rest on your sternum. If you have wide-set breasts, you need to look for a bra with a wider center panel because it will fit better. If you have really closely placed breasts, there should be almost no center panel. Strap placement. If your straps continually slip, look at how the straps are sewn on to the bra. Close to the underarm, and they will have a tendency to fall off. Sewn right above the apex of the cup (called a center pull strap) and you probably won’t have this problem. Sewn in the back where they are kicked in or sewn closer to the center and again, your straps will probably stay in place.

Tell us more about HerRoom.com. HerRoom is designed so that you have more information that if you went to a store to buy bras. First, there is a lot of patented features. We have the “see it under” set of images for every bra we sell. This way, you will know if any of our bras will work under a challenging neckline. Next, we have fitters comments within our details area. No site has the detail we have. We measure the thickness of the padding, the width of the straps, the height of the sides etc. We are the only site that does this. I personally work closely with the manufacturers to learn how their items are fitting. When I hear something unique, I put a Tomima Tip on the item. Again, not other site is giving you fit advice or calling out a unique feature or fit right on the product page. Our reviews are also unique. They are genuine and come from real women. We send all negative reviews to the manufacturer for comment. So, when you go through our product reviews you will see actual responses from them. No one else gives you this insight from the company that actually makes the product. I could go on and on here….
