Dressing for Your Body Shape– Tall Men: Key Guidelines

When dressing to fit your body shape, there is a need first to recognize the fact that this concept is individual to each person. Even though you may share similar attributes, e.g., tall with muscular shoulders, you should note that the human body varies enormously. Therefore, it is rather pointless for you to compare your body to that of another person.

Your shopping time would be better spent looking at clothes for big and tall men that will help you confidently display what you have, in a comfortable and stylish manner. Proportion is a critical component when looking to dress for your body type.

Below is an outline of different tall men body types, with similar tricks on how each can dress in a stylish, and proportionate manner.

The Trapezoid (Rhomboid)

It is a body characterized by shoulders that are slightly wider than the man’s waist. Many tall men consider this to be the ideal body type, as it makes it easy to do any kind of clothing item. If you happen to have this kind of body frame, it means that you can try almost anything, and it will be a good fit for you.

Try and experiment with different textures and patterns. But ensure that they remain in proportion. If this is not your body type, worry not, as only less than ten percent of tall men have this particular shape.

The Inverted Triangle

It is a type of body characterized by the presence of very broad shoulders and a correspondingly tiny waist. With this body type, the goal will be to turn attention from the upper part of your body towards the lower area. You will be aiming to create a balance, and you will thus need to settle on clothes for big and tall men that will help you balance out the wide shoulders.

Do’s

  • Wear sweaters and V-neck shirts to turn the eye away from your chest area
  • Wear double-breasted blazers to create an illusion of having a wide torso that is proportionate to the shoulders
  • Wear pants with pattern or texture to draw the eyes downwards

Don’ts

  • Stay away from scrawny jeans as they will make your legs appear skinnier ad the shoulders wider
  • Stay away from structured jackets or blazers. Be sure to avoid shoulder pads as they can make the shoulders seem wider

The Rectangle Body Type

With this body type, both the waist and shoulders are wide. Your goal will be to ensure that your shoulders do not appear broad, and the waist smaller. Proper dressing can help you create an illusion of having a rhomboid body shape.

Do’s

  • Go for slim fitting clothes as you will want the waist to appear as small as possible
  • Don slim fit blazers that have shoulder pads to assist make the waist look skinnier while ensuring that the shoulders remain wide
  • Go for circular necklines that help in drawing attention to your chest region

Don’ts

  • Stay away from the attention-grabbing belts
  • If possible, stay away from the double-breasted jackets as they only contribute to enhancing your rectangular shape

A perfectly paired ensemble can easily get ruined by wearing clothing items that are not a good fit for your body type. Many well-dressed men will confidently tell you that the secret to a flattering and comfortable style always comes down to finding the right fit.

I promised to share a Men’s Gift Guide and delivered a variety of items below.  Shoppers will find everything from beard oil, sweaters, and cuff links!

The sole purpose of creating a gift guide is to assist everyone with their holiday shopping. Remember, purchasing in-store can be very hectic. If you’ve waited until the last – minute (because this happens) check the scheduled arrival date on items.  How unfortunate would it be to have gifts ship after the holiday!

To purchase from the kit, click on the individual product and it will lead to the direct purchasing site.

Original Crackage

*  How long have you been in the fashion industry and how did you get started?  I have been in the fashion industry since October of 2012. I went school at North Carolina Central University in the Fall of 2010 to pursue my degree in fashion. As a student, I starting thinking of ways to start my clothing line; as far as developing a name, concept, theme, ect. By October of 2012, I had everything ready to start selling my clothes on campus and other areas, and in March of 2014 I officially launched my brand website, www.originalcrackage.com.

*  Describe your collection and inspiration for your designs – Original Crackage is a high-end, urban, fashion brand specializing in uniquely exclusive designs which include black&white, stripes, lines, abstract shapes, and hints of color blocking. All the designs are original and come from my imagination which stays consistent to the brands concept/theme. This goes along with the brand message, which is to be you, be original, and embrace whatever it is about yourself that people might not understand. This is the origin of the inspiration for the brand.

*  What is the best piece of advice you can give to Baltimore City youth?  To be yourself and don’t worry about what the crowd is doing. You only live once, and with this one shot would you rather be someone who made something of themselves, or some one who didn’t? Live your life with no regrets!

What inspired you to become a menswear designer?

My father was the biggest inspiration. He opened my eyes to the industry and really took me under his wing. Since working with him I have developed my own style in how I design clothing.

In your opinion, what makes your studio and collection unique from any other brand?

Our studio is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. My father and I are both musicians and we have a full stage setup in our studio. We enjoy playing music after a long day. He is a drummer and I’m a bassist. We have a different ambiance compared to most places. We are located on 1400 Aliceanna Street in a two hundred year old warehouse. The juxtaposition of a vintage building with modern luxury suits really works for us. We are really active in the community as well. We recycle gently used suits and give them to gentleman who have been recently released from prison. The goal is to dress them accordingly to give them a better chance at landing a career. More info can be found at www.sharpdressedman.org

What are some of your greatest accomplishments as a designer?

I was named Baltimore’s Best Tailor by the City Paper in 2014. I also was awarded 40 Under 40 award from the Baltimore Business Journal.

What’s your favorite accessory from the collection?

We just finished up a ton of new ties that are made from vintage silk. They all are beautiful but one particular paisley tie has been my favorite!

products6 10268699_669041523165945_2756549420953977287_n

Honestly, how many suits do you own?

I have all the staple suits of a wardrobe. The navy solid, grey solid, charcoal herringbone are essentials in anyone’s wardrobe. I have about 15 suits. I recycle my older suits and give them to our Sharp Dress Man program. I would have a much bigger wardrobe if I kept all of my suits, but the enjoyment of telling a gentleman that the suit I’m giving them was mine personally is an awesome feeling.

Do you have any advice for anyone that’s interested in becoming a menswear or fashion designer?

I would recommend spending as much time as you can meeting people in your industry. They can help refer business and teach you things about the business. I personally think it makes you a better designer if you can help recommend other people for your clients needs.

What’s in the future for Christopher Schafer Clothier?

Right now we are rapidly growing here in Baltimore. The vision is to have a shop in Los Angeles and London.
