Whether you’re soaking up some sun around a backyard pool, gardening, or strolling around the neighborhood, this season’s swimwear and cover-ups are not only stylish, but doing double duty to keep you comfortable.

In honor of Lands’ End International Swimsuit Day (May 19th,) style and beauty expert, Brittney Levine will prove not all swimwear is created equal and breaking down the best swimwear for all your summer activities.

PLANET FASHION PRESENTS SWIM WEEKEND MIAMI 2017

Planet Fashion, one of the nation’s leading fashion media and production companies, has announced its sizzling showcase of next season’s sexiest swimwear as part of a three-night cutting-edge fashion phenomenon featuring today’s iconic designers and some of the nation’s most buzzworthy bikini brands.

Planet Fashion Presents Swim Weekend will take place Thursday, July 20th through Saturday, July 22nd at the renowned SLS South Beach and Hyde Beach, located on Collins Avenue, with doors opening for each nightly runway show at 7:00 p.m. Industry aficionados who descend on South Florida each year for Miami’s Swim Week are already requesting front row seats for the inaugural event featuring exclusive presentations by VersaceCavalli and DSquared2, among other leading national and local Miami designers, whose latest creations will be adorning some of today’s top runway and swimwear models. The weekend will also feature an exclusive Pop-up Shop and Gifting Suite for attending celebrities, social influencers and VIPs, as well as surprise musical performances by special guest artists.

“We’re bringing back the “sexy” to swimwear,” says Celia Evans, founder and owner of Planet Fashion Media.  “Miami’s annual Swim Week has become too predictable and familiar over the years, so we wanted to create something that would turn heads and break the mould of the traditional format that has been tailored for the retail industry. Our three-night Swim Weekend is for everyone – whether you’re a serious buyer, a woman interested in the latest cutting-edge styles or someone who simply likes a fun night of fashion. Our inaugural Swim Weekend will not only showcase the world’s leading designers, but also shine a spotlight on some of our homegrown and emerging talent, who are equally loved and admired by their own followers across the country.  As with all our fashion shows around the world, each night will be full of steamy runway revelry and plenty of energy that Miami is known for in the heart of summer.”

The Opening Night on Thursday, July 20th will feature individual runway presentations by Roberto Cavalli SwimwearNash Beach and the massively popular Revel Rey by Washington based designer, Audrey Swanson.  After making her debut at Swim Week last year with her “Funk n’ Sol” Spring/Summer 2017 collection, Audrey returns to South Florida with a huge following by those who admire her custom and hand painted prints that combine fashion and art in to vibrant and unique bikini patterns inspired by her explorations to places like Bora Bora, Rangiroa and Maui.  Planet Fashion has invited Swanson to give attendees a sneak peak in to Revel Rey’s latest print innovations.

The Main Event on Friday, July 21st will feature runway presentations from VersaceDSquared2, and two of the swim industry’s brightest stars – Karma Bikinis and OMG Miami SwimwearJulienne Worring and Antje Worring founded Karma Bikinis in 2014 through their combined passions for ocean conservation. Their commitment to fair trade standards and sustainability means limited collections are released every six weeks in each design, to eliminate environmental offsets and to keep their clientele at the forefront of the latest styles.  Furthermore, the sisters formed a commitment to donate 7% of all proceeds received by Karma Bikinis towards ocean conservation efforts.  With more than half a million followers on social media, OMG Miami Swimwear is the explosive sensation from the streets of Miami Beach by Andrea Gaviria, who built the company in 2016 after struggling to find a bikini that fitted her well. After making her own swimsuit and posting it on social media with a viral effect, OMG Miami Swimwear was born with the mission of creating fashionable and feminine swimwear from conventional and innovative designs and trends.  Celebrities such as Sofía Vergara have chosen Andrea’s designs for their curvaceous form and function.

The Designer Showcase on Saturday, July 22nd will feature especially selected runway presentations by Just Bones BoardwearHot Miami StylesGabriela Pires and Art Hearts Fashion.  The brand known for “Reinventing The Boardshort” is Just Bones Boardwear, designed by Jennifer Weisman, who garnered attention on the Miami Beach runways last year, when surf style models were showcased wearing her colorful printed boardshorts. Beach Style: Selecting The Perfect Cover-Up

Raise your hands if you’re excited about summer! A few more glorious weeks until vacation and we will have the chance to press the reset button. When it comes to beach style, it’s easy to get it wrong; not all sarongs can be worn on the sand and crochet sundresses can’t protect you from sunburn! It’s time for the cover-up to get a makeover because beachwear is about more than kaftans!

Denim Mini

While we know you love cut off shorts why not give them a well-deserved rest and show off your suntanned legs in a faded denim mini skirt. The mini skirt arrived in a blaze of glory (in the sixties) representing freedom and self-expression as thousands of young women discovered its sex appeal! These days, mini skirts come in various styles, shapes and colors. A faded denim mini is cute, comfy, and an easy way to infuse your outfit with a festival vibe. Think beach wave curls, minimal jewelry, flip flops, and a white tank top for a pretty, natural look.

Open Kimono

Kimonos has stormed the catwalk to become a much-loved fashion staple. A beautiful, silk kimono dresses up a pair of jeans, cold shoulder or lace tank top while being a fabulous alternative to a coat or jacket when the weather’s warm. Kimono’s also look gorgeous over a bikini and act as an instant cover up. They inject glamour into the most basic outfit. Thanks to their silk ties you can either wear them open (for sunbathing) or loosely tie them so you can see a hint of cleavage.

Statement Jumpsuit

If you only pack for one night, make sure it’s a silk or linen halter neck jumpsuit. Why? Even an upscale restaurant won’t say no to a trendy jumpsuit worn with strappy heels and diamond jewelry. Looking for glamorous inspiration? Grab a glossy magazine and see how the rich and famous do beach beauty. Looking to treat yourself to some right-hand bling before vacation? Head on over to www.diamondregistry.com to learn about diamonds and get a quote on your dream ring!

Jumpsuits are also a fantastic way to show off your sun-kissed skin and the perfect alternative instead of wearing a top, skirt or trousers. This www.missoni.com lilac jumpsuit is a stunning option and will look amazing with deep cork wedges.

White Button Down

Looking to hit the beach bar? A white button down will not only give you coverage but it’s still fashion-forward and classic. Make sure you pick one that comes past your thighs and not too flimsy for a chic dinner.

Shalaja Swimwear Collection: Interview with Style + Life + Fashion

Style + Life + Fashion had the opportunity to interview the owner and designer of Shalaja Swimwear.  Located in Montgomery, Alabama, Shaquoya Jackson decided to stop searching for the ‘sexy, flirty yet sophisticated’ swimwear she desired and create it herself.

Shaquoya

1. When did you realize you wanted to become a swimwear designer?

Well I have always loved fashion, modeling, and entertainment, and I always wanted to be a commercial model and be involved in the entertainment industry (Hosting or interviewing.)

photo (9)

I realized I wanted to become a designer in 2011 after I prayed to God to show me my purpose in life. When he showed me my purpose thats when it became my passion!

2. How long does it usually take to construct a swimsuit? And what’s your favorite piece from the collection?

To actually create a sketch design only takes about 5-15 mins depending on if I already have an idea in mind. Sometimes I sketch images that I’ve pictured in my mind and sometimes I sketch and design as I go. To get the swimsuit made takes around 2 1/2 weeks. I have a few favorite pieces from the collection so this will be hard! I guess I would have to say Black Chic Monokini is my favorite because black looks nice on everyone, and the high fashion look/design plus the mesh cut outs makes me feel sexy!

photo (10)

3. What was the first article of clothing you ever designed? What’s your inspiration?

My first article of clothing I ever designed was probably a skirt and top when I was in middle school. My first designed piece that was made was a swimsuit. My inspiration for my designs are everything that I like. If I see a print that I like on anything it may inspire me to use those colors or print. If I see a beautiful piece of clothing item it may inspire me to design a swimsuit a certain way. If I see a funky hairstyle it may inspire me to create a wild and crazy piece that would coordinate with the style. What inspires me in life is the fact that I am surrounded by striving, successful, and supportive people who works to achieve the best out of life and I want to do the same!

4. What are some of your accomplishments as a designer?

Actually just making it to the point where I am now is an accomplishment for me. I started a business completely on my own; researching and gaining all of the knowledge that I can to make all of this happen! I was involved in Miami International Fashion Week 2013 as well as Alabama Fashion Week 2013. I will be showcasing new pieces in Hollywood, Ca for Facet Fashion Week 2014. I have been featured in Epok Online Magazine, and Life on The Water Magazine which is sold in barnes and nobles, yachts, etc. I have also had the opportunity to supply my alumni school, ASU, with suits for ballet dancers and their performance.

5. Who are some of your favorite clothing brands?

I don’t have a favorite clothing brand. I wear everything and anything that I like. I mainly shop online at various stores, but I do love Versace and the luxurious prints used for their clothing.

6. What’s in the future for ShaLaJa Swimwear?

In the future ShaLaJa Swimwear will have a men’s line, kids line, exotic wear, beach lounge, and cover ups.

How to Find Maternity Swimwear “That Suits” by Guest Contributor Sally Neal

Shopping for maternity clothes can be a nightmare. In fact, shopping for anything baby-related can be a pretty trying experience. From the day you find out you’re expecting, your house will gradually become full of scraps of paper on which you have listed the next ten things you need to buy. Your partner will watch in slow-mo horror as the balance in the joint bank account rapidly plummets from ‘acceptable’ to ‘getting slightly worried’. The spare room will be piled high with prams, Moses baskets, baby-grows donated by well-meaning friends and family and all sorts of other paraphernalia.

Not that I’m trying to put you off, rather I want to help you during such a busy time. Take a leaf out my book: don’t sweat the small stuff. For example, I spent a great deal of time trying on maternity swimming costumes and bikinis in the shops when I was expecting, only to realise that I could have found one on line. The Internet is a fantastic tool to use when you are pregnant, as there are loads of handy hints about what you need to do and lots of blogs which you can read.

I also felt under quite a lot of pressure to do a sufficient amount of exercise whilst pregnant. At first, I carried on with my normal light jogging routine, but after a while I found running was too much to contend with. Going for long walks sounded like an attractive option, but unfortunately I worked full time up until 8 months so I could not devote time to doing this. Then I found out that swimming was a viable alternative.

In terms of exercise, for example, swimming is one of the best ways a Mum-to-be can get the exercise she needs without overstretching. In terms of swimwear, fashion lines are much more au fait with flattering a pregnant wearer than a decade ago, hence there is a much wider choice of cossies to choose from. Comfort and flexibility make for a comfortable bikini or swim suit.

Here’s how to choose a swim suit to suit you:

-Pick a bikini or costume with adjustable straps to support your bust, should you need additional support in this area

– If you are feeling smaller on top, a halter neck bikini top will enhance your bust. Bright colours or ruffles will also help draw attention to the bust

-As many women are blessed with large hips, a heavily detailed swimsuit or a halter neck style works well to draw attention from this area. Should you opt for a bikini, wearing darker bottom halves will focus the eyes on the top

-If you have a boyish figure, choosing a low-leg swimsuit will make your body appear longer
So, grab a swimming costume and get rid of all that pregnancy stress by going for a swim. It can’t be that bad, as people do it again and again! In fact, I’m currently pregnant with baby number two! Better start writing some more lists…
