Adult Acne: Which Product Option is Right for You

There are so many acne and breakout busting treatments on the market. It’s common to get a feeling of product overload. Dr. Margarita Lolis a Board-Certified Dermatologist in northern New Jersey who takes a holistic approach to treating skincare issues; breaks down the list of common products to consider using with the benefits of each. Hopefully this menu of options will clear some confusion.

Go simple on cleanser. People who are prone to breakouts may use a cleanser with salicylic acid triggering excessive dryness which only increases oil production leading to a breakout cycle. Gentler products that are appealing to all skin types such as Cetaphil or CeraVe are great options because they don’t strip away moisture and soothe the face.

Exfoliate weekly. They key here is not to be too harsh. You want to gently rub product into your face in circular motion then rinse with luke warm water. There are new products available with charcoal an ingredient which does a great job controlling oil in acne prone skin. People with sensitive skin should opt for an exfoliating mask which is less irritating.

Soothe with serums. Acne prone skin needs moisture not oil. Serums that address acne without compromising moisture are a great bet. Serums penetrate the skin quickly making them a great option for nighttime healing as you sleep.

Try skin oils. You can add drops of vitamin C oil, argan oil, or vitamin e oil to your serum or directly onto your face after cleansing which is like a vitamin boost to skin. This will address acne scarring helping them heal quicker.

Don’t skip moisturizer. Many people who are prone to breakouts want to skip moisturizer because they think their skin is oily enough. The reason skin is producing oil is because it is lacking moisture. Moisturizers with Hyaluronic acid draws water from the atmosphere and keeps skin hydrated. This is great for all skin types. You cannot go wrong with more water in the skin.

Consider a peel with a pro. Chemical peels are a great option for skin that has scarring and Hyperpigmentation. While there are at home, do it yourself options available I have seen many people harm their own skin with peels. You really want to work with a professional as not to make matters worse. People often think a burning sensation means it’s working so they mistakenly leave peels on for too long and hurt themselves.

Balance skin with a toner. I like toners because they do a nice job of clearing away dirt and make-up, shrinking pores, and restoring skin to its natural pH balance. Witch Hazel is a simple no fuss astringent found at any drug store which works wonders on acne or break out prone skin.

Do a mask every week. You want to choose “detoxifying masks” featuring ingredients like, charcoal, clay, sulfur. You may want to alternate between a more soothing mask one week and a treatment mask when a breakout first occurs. Another option is using a soothing mask on the cheeks and then a clarifying mask on the chin and jawline.

Spot treat and refrain from picking. We touch our faces approximately 25 times per hour. It’s hard to be conscious of it. When we have a breakout, we may sit at our desks or behind the wheel picking away. It is a habit that spreads bacteria and leads to scarring. Getting a prescription level topical spot treatment is key because many are designed to work immediately which lessens the need to pick.

Ultimately, when in doubt see your dermatologist who will assess your skin and the many factors that may be causing acne. Oftentimes dermatologists will outline a treatment regimen that is more customized to you considering age, skin type and lifestyle.

Talk of Alabama Lifestyle Segment: Breast Cancer Awareness Fall Must-Haves

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  To celebrate efforts of the National Breast Cancer Foundation I hosted a Lifestyle Segment with ABC 33/40 on Monday, October 30, 2017.  The television appearance featured beauty and wellness tips to help women that are undergoing cancer treatment.

A few of the suggestions discussed on-air included the use of hair turbans, scarfs, mineral makeup, and water-based nail polish.  Companies such as STILA Cosmetics provided makeup from the Living Beauty Collection and Dana’s Bakery shipped Pink Cotton Candy Macaroons that encouraged proceeds to be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

This particular segment was dear to my heart because my mother is a Lymphatic Cancer survivor.  Special thank you to Talk of Alabama for allowing me to share cancer related beauty tips with a local audience!

5 Simple Tips to Maintain Healthy, Glowing Skin this Fall/Winter

With chilly temps on the way the battle for healthy, glowing skin officially begins. To beat winter beauty woes like dryness and a lack luster complexion, your skincare routine will require some extra TLC and loads of hydration.

1.SHORTEN YOUR SHOWER

A hot, steamy shower can leave your mind peaceful but your body parched. Instead of stripping away natural oils limit it to five minutes, and suds up with a body wash; then, seal with an oil infused lotion. Try The Mane Choice Heavenly Halo Oil+Lotion and Body Wash set ($14.99 each; Target.com). Infused with soy and multivitamins to restore and hydrate skin by protecting against moisture loss.

2.EXFOLIATE ONCE A WEEK

Proper exfoliation prevents the skin from developing a dull appearance – Especially during the colder seasons. Using an exfoliator once a week can provide an instantly rejuvenated skin tone. Try the Dear by Renée® Gentle Facial Scrub ($49.95, DearByRenee.com) This gentle gel-based scrub contains Jojoba microbeads which sweeps away dead skin cells, refines surface texture and helps decongest skin.

3.SHINE ON

Bring a little magic to your complexion by dabbing a shimmery cream highlighter onto the cheekbones, inner corners of your eyes, and brow bones. To draw out the warmer tones in darker skin, opt for a gold shade. If you’re fair, pink tones will impart a natural glow. Try Arbonne Starlight Glow Palette ($75, Arbonne.com) which contains an array of warm to cool powder pigments or Arbonne Sheer Glow Highlight Stick ($50, Arbonne.com) a multi-purpose highlight stick containing a Pearl shade to highlight and Bronze to give an effortless glow.

4.KEEP UP YOUR DAILY SPF HABITS

It might be tempting to stash your sunscreen away until next summer, but it’s necessary to wear year-round if you want your complexion to look its best. Slather on the SPF 365 days a year for skin that’s healthy enough to glow naturally! Try Arbonne RE9 Advanced Restorative Cream SPF 20 Sunscreen ($66, Arbonne.com) The concentrated formula protects against UVA/UVB rays and contains collagen-supporting ingredients!

5.DON’T FEAR THE MASK

Hydration masks are a key to giving your skin the nutrients it craves in order to reveal an enviable glow! Try Dear by Renée® Pomegranate Hydrating Mask ($49.95, DearByRenee.com) the unique gel-based formulation leaves skin super moisturized and glowing with Aloe Vera Leaf and Mushroom Extracts to nourish and soften skin.

How To: Update Your Skincare Routine for Fall

The way you stock your skincare products should be somewhat similar to how you approach your clothes from season to season. It’s important to switch out the products that are not ideal for the current weather.

Below are some key tips for transitioning your skincare regimen from late summer heat to that crisp autumn chill which includes product suggestions from botanical based skincare brands infused with good for you ingredients like Orange stem cells, Peony and Lemon extract!

    • Try: Arbonne RE9 Advanced Restorative Cream ($66, Arbonne.com) provides loads of hydration thanks to hyaluronic acid that acts as a cushioning and lubrication agent to lock in moisture while orange stem cells help to improve the appearance of skin radiance, elasticity, firmness and texture

How to Fix Summer Skin Issues by Board Certified Dermatologist

As we head into the cooler months the weather change impacts our skin. We may notice changes to texture, tone, perhaps some breakouts and over all ruddiness and damage from being outside enjoying the summer. Here are some of the most common post summer skin issues I see in my practice along with some solutions for them.

  1. Sunspots and wrinkles.

Days at the beach or pool can lead to sunspots even if you apply sunscreen. We cannot reach every spot and sometimes we forget to reapply after swimming. Also, even when wearing polarized sunglasses, we may put them on our heads; temporarily squinting leading to crow’s feet.

If you’re noticing some new spots, freckles and wrinkles reach for a retinoid. Your dermatologist can offer prescription strength creams. Deeper wrinkles like the ones between the eyes usually require something like Botox but, you can minimize the appearance with creams that feature glycolic acid or alpha hydroxy acid. These are wonder vitamins for the skin stimulate skin shedding and cellular turn over. A serum used at night will help; but be patient and use it regularly to see a gradual change. Chemical peels and intense light treatments (IPL) can handle any discoloration.

  2. Clogged pores and dullness.

During the summertime, we perspire plus we are exposed to daily pollution in the air. When you combine these factors plus daily use of make-up, pores get clogged. Beneath the skin are our sebaceous glands which secrete an oil called sebum. Sebum sticks to dead skin cells like glue and funnels these dead skin cells through the pores. This is a process that is supposed to help you maintain healthy skin. The problem is when the weather and elements speed up the process pores become clogged. The dead skin cells get trapped along with bacteria and this leads to dull, ruddy skin with breakouts. An exfoliating face wash with glycolic acid or salicylic acid helps tremendously. Your dermatologist can create a skin care regimen based on your specific skin type and issues so you don’t deregulate pH levels in the skin which will only make things worse leading to…

  1. Acne flare ups.

Consistent heat and humidity combined with cell phone use and touching our faces after touching dirty surfaces, leads to a post-summer breakout. These breakouts can be cystic which means bigger, deeper, more painful pimples. It also can lead to a cycle of breakouts that include, treat, pick, peel, scar, and heal only to see another pimple and another. Over the counter acne treatments such as face washes with sulfur, black charcoal masks and soaps, spot treatments with benzoyl peroxide can certainly help. However, when the breakouts are consistent a dermatologist can assess your skin and present solutions that may even involve nutritional changes, vitamins and light therapy for mild or moderate acne.

  1. Dry lips.

We all know about winter time lip chapping. In the summer lips can get incredibly dry. Using a lip balm with SPF is very helpful but unless we are applying it regularly while at the beach, pool, or working out outdoors, one swipe under lip gloss isn’t enough. Drinking water, and keeping alcohol consumption to a minimum helps keep us hydrated. When we are dehydrated, we see it on our lips. Pay close attention to any freckles or discoloration to the lips after prolonged sun exposure. If you see any odd changes, see your dermatologist.

  1. Ashy, flaky, itchy, skin.

If you are often in chlorine or salt water you’ll find your skin to feel rough and dry almost as if it is shedding. Also, going from extreme heat to cool air conditioning leads to skin going from perspiration to goosebumps. This rapid drop in temperature affects skin. Taking luke-warm showers and using a gentle exfoliating skin wash followed by a hydrating moisturizer keeps skin supple. Add a few drops of vitamin E to your lotion for added nourishment.

When it comes to the face, peeling foreheads and noses points to sun damage. Oftentimes people wait until something is visible to them or when an is followed by a dry patch. Dermatologists can look at things with a more discerning eye plus magnifiers that enable them to flag something that could escalate into something more. If everyone put October on their calendars as the month to see a dermatologist for a skin check we would see many skin conditions be solved quicker. This includes melanomas.

Intensive Recovery Japanese Binchotan Zumi Mask: Beauty Review

I receive a lot of questions about my skincare routine. The hidden secret is that I use a weekly face mask.

Face masks are different from the ordinary scrub or toner because it hydrates the skin and removes oils.  It’s the perfect option for those life events that require healthy skin with flawless makeup application.

Beauty Review:

I had the opportunity to review the Intensive Recovery Japanese Binchotan Zumi Mask. Upon placing the mask on my face, I was skeptical about the unique shape.

I wanted to review the product during a time that I was suffering from breakouts. To my surprise the mask left my face looking and feeling incredibly smooth.  After researching the product I discovered the charcoal has detoxifying ingredients.

The Zumi Mask package included a serum that serves as a natural purifier.  To learn more about the product and review for yourself, check out the information below:

What: Tresor Rare is a high-end luxury skincare line featuring the Intensive Recovery Japanese Binchotan Zumi Mask. This $5000 beauty mask is made from Japanese Kishu Binchotan charcoal which is the highest quality charcoal. This is the same charcoal used for water filtration. Avid campers and mountain climbers use it and… it is expensive and rare.

Why the hefty pricetag?

The Kishu Binchotan has unparalleled detoxifying benefits. Kishu Binchotan charcoal is the best in the world due to its unique structure and origin (Japan). It comes from a tree that grows there since 1688. When the tree is grown, hard wood is collected from it then burned. The remaining natural powder is then carbonized in a traditional Japanese carbonizing technique at 1200 Celsius which give it this rich, dense, pasty texture. It’s knows as “the golden charcoal.”

Products containing activated charcoal are usually more expensive. In fact, the more expensive products out there have two things warranting the price first… great packaging and secondly… higher amounts of binchotan activated charcoal. Porous binchotan has a solid structure with irregular holes which maximizes its ability to absorb toxins (hence it’s use in water filtration). This Tresor Rare mask is made of 100% Kishu Binchotan and it offers the highest level of skin detoxification on the market. The price…$5000.

This mask does not appear black as it dissolves into the skin. The mask is gold and once the serum is applied to the skin, the gold mask is applied on top.

The product was produced with natural plant extracts and emollients, organic ingredients, essential oils, natural plant and seed based oils and no artificial colors.

Additional Information:

This ultra-precise, high-performance, intensive age defying treatment mask is perfectly adapted to the skin. Its excellent fit assures ultimate penetration of unique double-layered specialty ingredients into the skin. Once applied to the face, this mask made of active charcoal, releases negative ions also known as “Vitamins in the Air.” They can balance the skin and returning its natural balance. Skin looks younger and more radiant.

This amazing serum starts off black and disappears into the skin – containing active charcoal; Mother Nature’s natural skin purifier.

How To Maintain A Young-Looking Face | Expert Tips

We all want to look as youthful as possible for as long as possible. We spend money on creams, facials, fillers, and even sometimes plastic surgery. To get some tips for how we can maintain a young-looking face, we went to several great beauty professionals including Dr. Kirk Brandow, founder and director of the Brandow Clinic for Cosmetic Surgery in Philadelphia, who has appeared on national programs such as Good Morning America and 20/20. Here’s what they all have to say.

 Featured Photo from Instyle.com

  1. Get rest.

There absolutely is such a thing as beauty sleep. “Women come to my practice thinking they need an eye-job or a facelift when all they need is sleep. Sleep is a time when we rejuvenate ourselves and cellular turnover is at its height. Getting 7-8 hours of sleep nightly will make a huge difference in how youthful a woman appears especially as she approaches age 30 and collagen production decreases,” says Dr. Brandow. “A woman can speed up aging if they are constantly sleep deprived.”

  1. Use an overnight treatment.

If you suffer from breakouts or skin dryness leading to wrinkles or blotches, treating your skin concerns at night, is a way to maintain a youthful glow. “Work closely with your dermatologist or aesthetician who can recommend non-irritating skin treatments specifically addressing your concern,” advises Dr. Brandow. You want to take advantage of overnight options available to boost collagen and heal skin while sleeping.

  1. Hydrate

When it comes to anti-aging and putting your most youthful face forward, water is key. Water flushes your system of toxins which helps skin to glow. “Women spend a lot of money on topical creams formulated to boost moisture and hydrate the skin yet, if they integrated more water, even 4, 8 ounce glasses per day, they would see fewer wrinkles and an overall smoother younger skin texture within a month,” says Dr. Adriane Pompa, Miami based board certified dermatologist who specializes in aging skin.

  1. Be smart about fillers.

Fillers are used to add volume that diminishes as we age but people have taken it to extremes. There have been many advancements with fillers over the past 5 years offering more options and more sophisticated ways to administer them to achieve a youthful look.

According to Dr. Brandow, many patients believe that filling their cheeks will soften their laugh lines, so they push doctors to administer two to four syringes in their cheek bones and cheek area at once. This can result in swelling and doesn’t necessarily lift their face. Fillers are often done as an alternative to a face lift but, if not spread out over several weeks, it just gives the patient an unnatural look that distorts their face and makes them look odd.

“My personal preference is to perform the fillers sequentially. For example, I will use one syringe of filler in multiple locations. Then I’ll have patients return in 4-6 weeks and perhaps do another syringe to the same places, or different places, giving them an overall natural look. This leads to a softer, more natural result. The key to doing fillers well are going with small amounts every 4-6 weeks,” explains Dr. Brandow.

  1. Get facials.

According to Dr. Adriane Pompa, one facial per month does wonders for skin’s clarity, texture, and ability to produce collagen. “There are many at-home facials available one can do weekly. The key is knowing your skin type and ingredients that address your specific skin concern. Also, you can treat different parts of the face differently depending on skin issue. Let’s say you are prone to breakouts on your jawline, have wrinkles on your forehead and dryness on the cheeks, your dermatologist or aesthetician can recommend a facial plan customized for you.”

  1. Consider lasers and light!

Lasers are another tool that blasts away acne scars, evidence of past sun damage and evens out skin giving that flawless, youthful glow. There have been so many advancements with lasers resulting in more immediate results without downtime. Lasers typically cost between $600 – $1200 per treatment depending on the city and type of laser. The advantage with lasers is accuracy. You can treat a specific area without affecting the rest of the surrounding skin.

  1. Tone down your make-up.

One way to immediately take 10 years off your look is to revamp your make-up. Consider hiring a professional make-up artist who can teach you how to enhance and even modernize your look. New York make-up artist, Carlo Geraci, who was protégé to Trish McEvoy and Kevin Aucion, explains that a lot of women are doing their make-up the same way they did 20 years ago. That bronzer that you loved in the 90’s when you were 24 may appear harsh and outdated at 44. “Heavy eye liner and strong lip colors may only accentuate wrinkles and fine lines. As women age, less is more when it comes to make-up. Opt for a great hydrating foundation or a touch of concealer, a pinch of blush, a swipe of mascara or a gray or brown eyeliner and a natural looking lip liner topped with a tinted hydrating balm,” he suggests.
