Dressing On-Trend for Carnival Season

Mardi Gras is a southern, carnival tradition.  I have enjoyed participating in the festival since childhood.  This year, I was invited to attend one of the balls. Guests were asked to dress in non-traditional attire, wearing sequin tops and denim jeans.

Immediately, I started searching for the perfect sequin blouse.  I was able to find what I needed at the local thrift shop.

The top (below) had all of the colors that represent the event and matched perfectly with my bottom.

I have secretly been waiting for the right time to wear my clear ankle booties. This shoe was on-trend and wore nicely for an evening of dancing.

Thrifting can be a lot of fun if you have an idea of the piece your searching. What’s your favorite thrifted item?

America’s Next Top Model Season 23 Episode 13 Recap

Rimmel London was the focus behind this week’s episode of America’s Next Top Model Season 23. The models were expected to perform as an ambassador for the company.  They were judged on brand awareness and makeup application on their partner.

Rita Ora expressed that being a spokesperson is about personality, technique, and the ability to sell a product.

As a result, Cory Anne won the Rimmel London spokesperson challenge. The company surprised  (both) Cory Anne and India with a visit from their mom.

Drew Elliott directed the second challenge, which was a Rimmel London commercial.  The models highlighted Scandalize Waterproof Mascara and Eyeliner.  Both products were showcased in the rain while Courtney’s facial expression conflicted with the video shoot.

During elimination, the panelist expressed the importance of “branding” while representing a cosmetics line. Courtney was eliminated from the competition.

Spring and Summer Trend: Chunk It Up

Winter is associated with anything chunky; whether it’s chunky knits, chunky boots or a nice thick, chunky scarf for cold spells, it’s all…big. When summer comes (not far away) we tend to ditch this in favor of lighter accessories to keep us cool and stick to the “stereotypical” trend that we are all brought up with. It’s not even logical; of course we need to be free and floaty when the sun is beating down on us, but what if some people don’t like the dainty stuff that we are expected to wear? What if we want to hold on to winter but aren’t quite sure how without overheating?

Don’t panic – it all lies in the accessories.

Hair

This is one thing that you can so totally afford to go big and bold with. Cable-knit jumpers always have a lovely plaited design? This can be transferred onto your head. Simply look up a few hair design tutorials on YouTube (Dutch braid is a great one to keep the hair out of your face but still provide a style that is pretty effortless once you get used to it) and rotate them around throughout the coming weeks. If you can’t keep the knits on you, at least you can keep your hair looking chunky. It’s actually quite summery to put your hair into braids anyway, but the bigger the better – don’t go small with them, pull them out and make them look as messy as you like. It’s the way to go.

Jewelry

Even if you know you have to wear as little as socially-acceptably possible to cope with the heat, there are things that you can wear to mix up your style a little. Gothic jewelry is a great example of something that is big and bold and makes a statement, but without drawing too much away from what you’re already wearing. Rather than layering up your clothes, layer up your necklaces; you don’t have to necessarily go for anything made out of metal, either. Knotted necklaces made out of hemp rope are springing back into fashion after their day in the 70s, and the beautiful gemstones that you can get adorning the middle of them really are an attractive centerpiece to what you’re wearing.

Makeup

There is little that you can do in terms of making your makeup bigger, but you can accentuate different features and use darker shades that you usually would have only brought out in the winter. It seems that plum and cherry lipsticks are consigned to the months of November and December, but don’t let them sit all lonely in your makeup bag for the next couple of seasons – bring them out and let them know that they’re still loved – who says you can’t?

PRIYANKA BOSE AT THE 89TH ACADEMY AWARDS ®

Last night at the 89th Academy Awards ® “Lion” actress Priyanka Bose wore a custom-made eco-conscious Vivienne Westwood Couture gown. The gown was accessorized with exclusive pieces from Atelier Swarovski’s first fine jewelry collection and featured Swarovski crystal in the dress detailing. Both gown and jewelry were worn in support of Suzy Amis Cameron’s Red Carpet Green Dress initiative. In 2009, Amis Cameron created Red Carpet Green Dress with the goal of creating awareness for the importance of sustainable practices in fashion. Each year, Red Carpet Green Dress works with international designers to create sustainable evening wear to showcase during the Academy Awards®.

The custom designed gown, is created in a jewel toned silk and lurex floral jacquard fabric, recycled from a past Vivienne Westwood collection. The pattern cutting technique has been designed to keep waste to an absolute minimum, using only 320 cms for the design. Leftover sequin film, usually left as waste from sequin production, is embroidered to the bodice of the dress creating a honeycomb effect, highlighted with reclaimed Swarovski crystals for added sparkle.

Inspired by nature and driven by science, Swarovski brings conscious luxury and innovation to the red carpet with the Atelier Swarovski Fine Jewelry Collection, handcrafted in a Parisian atelier and featuring Swarovski Created Diamonds and crystals. Swarovski Created Diamonds are grown in a state-of-the-art lab and have the same optical, chemical and physical attributes as mined diamonds.

“It was a dream come true to be able to wear this custom-made Vivienne Westwood gown and the first collection of Atelier Swarovski Fine Jewelry,” gushed Bose. “I felt like a queen! To be a part of this campaign that helps improve our environment and give back is a powerful thing. I try to live a minimalist lifestyle, but I am constantly learning and Red Carpet Green Dress has taught me that we can all do our part to help.”

Bose joined the rest of the cast for the current six-time nominated film “Lion”. Bose portrays “Kamla Munshi” alongside Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman in the feature film.

To qualify as a Red Carpet Green Dress eco-conscious garment, each piece must either be made from recycled, organic or repurposed materials, use handmade detailing or incorporate natural dye processing – always with a focus on minimal negative impact on the environment, and environmentally and socially responsible design.

For the 2017 Oscars-inspired campaign, Red Carpet Green Dress partnered with Atelier Swarovski and had the support of Earth Friendly Products, maker of ECOS™ Laundry Detergent to help raise funds for MUSE School CA. MUSE School CA is an environmental non-profit educational organization Amis Cameron founded in Calabasas, Calif., with her sister Rebecca Amis. The financial assistance enables students to access a transformative educational experience. MUSE School CA ensures small class size, personalized instruction and learning practices; all set within an inspiring and beautiful campus. Through these key elements, MUSE School CA paves the way in creating leaders of the future. For more information, go to www.museschool.org.
