NYFW Textured Hair and Cantu Products

Texture on the Runway, took place last Saturday in New York City.  This was a unique runway show where curls are embraced and the center of attention!  Five brands put together five amazing looks to celebrate every hair texture.

Step-by-step:
1. Starting with clean hair, apply Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream

2. Section off a horizontal part of hair in the nape and apply Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream and Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Moisturizing Twist & Lock Gel

3. Brush through to evenly distribute the product

4. Next, taking a medium sized section of hair and two strand twist the hair down to the ends

5. Roll the ends on to perm rods to create a curl

6. Repeat until all of the hair is twisted and rolled on perm rods

7. Once hair is completely dry, remove all perm rods and twists

8. Finally, separate each twist until desired fullness

Step-by-step:

2. Detangle and brush all hair into a top knot

4. Use a bristle brush to evenly distribute through the hair and secure with a pony tail holder

5. Take Marley hair and Kanekalon braiding hair, twist the two hair textures into a loose two strand twist and secure each end with an elastic band

6. Starting in the middle of the twisted extensions, secure around the top knot with bobby pins

7. Pin the twisted extensions into place, to best compliment the face shape

There are so many wonderful uses for the natural moisturizer Jojoba Oil.  This is considered to be a liquid wax that’s proven to work wonders on the hair, skin, and nails.

My first introduction to Jojoba Oil was through a routine hair appointment.  My hair is in a natural state (relaxer free) and my beautician suggested using JoJoba Oil on my scalp for nourishment.  I was excited to try this product because it’s important to understand your individual hair and follicle needs.

Jojoba Oil this is the perfect product for moms because pregnancy can often alter the skin.  For example, some women experience dryness or even worse stretch marks.  It’s suggested that you simply place a small amount in your hand (a little goes a long way) and massage into the skin.  The oil can be used on your face, legs, stomach area…basically the entire body.  It works as an all – over body moisturizer so don’t hesitate to apply as needed.

Lastly, I am someone who has dry cuticles and nails.  My beauty regime includes adding moisture to the hands and feet.  When visiting the nail salon, my manicurist always applies two coats of olive oil to my nails.  But when I’m at home, I like to use two drops of Jojoba Oil on my cuticles before bedtime to serve as an all natural product with no chemicals.

From my experience with Motions Treat & Repair products, the shampoo helps to retain moisture without completely drying out my hair.  The conditioner works wonders (after washing) making my hair much softer than before.  I also want to share that both products smell great throughout my wash and a few days afterwards.  It was clear that a professional product was used on my tresses.

Natural Hair Journey: Motions Hair Care Products

I am super excited to share this photo from my natural hair journey. Last Spring, Motions Hair Care Products shipped a variety of products to my doorstep for a blogger promotion.  During that time, I was suffering from hair breakage and wore several protective styles. In between wearing protective styles, I maintained my tresses with conditioners, trims, and hot steaming.

Anyone who’s a naturalista will confess that you anticipate your hair growing after the big chop. To others, the big chop can be dramatic but I wanted to start with a fresh mane of hair.

In this photo, I am wearing one of my favorite hairstyles (the twist out) which is a simple style that locks in moisture. I also like to wear a variety of hair accessories and deep conditioning treatments in the winter months.

Meet the Designer: Sarah Mukibi

1.  What inspired you to become a (hair) accessory designer and natural hair product distributor?

I started creating headbands because when I went into stores to find headbands for my hair some were so loose that I would have to double wrap them which would end up pulling my hair.

Now I sell headbands that are very unique and adjustable that range between $5 and $7.

I have been selling them vending at different natural hair events and they are also online for purchase.

2.   In your opinion, what makes your headbands unique from any other brand?

What makes my headbands different is that they are unique, adjustable and innovate. You can not find them anywhere in stores and I designed them specifically for African American women with natural hair.

3.   What are some of your greatest accomplishments as a (hair) designer?

One of my greatest accomplishment is actually incorporating Sisterhood of Natural Hair as a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC). Second great accomplishment was paticipating in my first natural hair event as a vendor, I was so scared but it turned out to be a great experience. Thirdly, is selling my headbands online, which is doing pretty good so far.

4.   What’s your favorite headband from the collection?

Do I have to choose I love them all (giggles) but if I really have to choose it would be my plain black one just because I can wear it with any outfit. I also love the leopard skin bows because they are fun and bold.

 5.  Honestly, how many hair care products do you own?

Honestly, I don’t own to many hair care products. I would say about 15 – 20. 

6.   Do you have any advice for anyone that’s interested in becoming a (hair) accessory designer or creating their own hair care product line?

The advice that I would give others concerning starting their own business is to just do it. It can be a bit scary but once you have come up with a plan start taking the steps towards making your dreams a reality.

Time waits for no one and there will never be a “right time” to start a business but if you believe in your product/services take a chance and if you fail it’s okay – reevaluate your plan and try again.

7.   What’s in the future for Adjustable Headbands and Natural Hair Products?

In the future I hope to get my headbands into retail stores. Soon I will also be starting a makeup line that will be all natural and bring back the make up that highlights the African American women. I also hope to start a natural hair care line that will consist of moisturizers, shampoos, conditioners and oils etc.
