Tiffany & Co. Jewels “Star” in The Great Gatsby Movie

Director Baz Luhrmann’s film The Great Gatsby debuts on May 10, and with it, The Great Gatsby Collection by Tiffany & Co., inspired by the film and created in collaboration with Academy Award®-winning costume and production designer Catherine Martin.

The spectacular jewelry is based on designs from the Tiffany Archives and worn by the film’s all-star cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, who appear as Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan.  “The jewelry symbolizes the story’s themes of wealth and privilege, and we approached its design with the utmost style and luxury in mind,” said Jon King, executive vice president of Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany’s dazzling creations illuminate the characters’ rarefied world of New York penthouses and Long Island estates.  Ms. Mulligan’s Tiffany wardrobe includes tassel necklaces and jewels with lustrous conch pearls.  At evening soirées her blond bob is circled with the Savoy, a headdress of diamonds and cultured pearls, and her gestures are accented by a hand ornament in a daisy motif and diamond rings with the Tiffany® Setting.  The daisy is also featured in earrings of Tiffany Yellow Diamonds and a long-stemmed brooch.

Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Jordan Baker, wears chandelier earrings of rose-cut diamonds, bracelets of diamonds and seed pearls, and Art Deco-inspired rings of sapphires and diamonds in platinum.  At posh parties her elegant ensembles are accented with fluid diamond necklaces and earrings of cushion-cut black onyx or emerald-cut aquamarines.

Mr. DiCaprio’s custom Brooks Brothers shirts are finished with oval cuff links of black or green enamel on 18 karat gold.  Essentials such as a slender card case and flask in sterling silver fit smoothly in the pockets of his tailored linen suits and tuxedo.

Trend Alert: Gift from Mom…My New Embroidered Jeans

I have to admit that I will fall in love with anything that’s embroidered.  Not sure if this has to do with my childhood or the fact that I grew up watching my mother sew and create custom made clothing.  And no, she wasn’t a tailor or semstress but she too had a true love for fabrics, textures, and design.

So with that being said, my love affair with fashion began at a young age (partially because of the obvious reasons) but mostly because of the connection/bond between myself and my mother.  When I was five years old, she taught me how to sketch paper dolls and design clothing.  At the age of seven she bought me my first sewing machine and said, “today you will learn how to sew clothing…for your Barbie dolls.”  On my sixteenth birthday, she arranged for me to learn makeup application (at the cosmetics counter.) My sophomore year in college, I decided to leave my Psychology major for a degree in Fashion Merchandising and she encouraged my decision (even though in the back of her mind she wanted me to become a Child Psychologist.)

Last month, I decided to travel “home” to visit my parents and of course, my mom had something special for me.  As I opened the shopping bag, I see a pair of embroidered jeans. She began to explain where she purchased the jeans and how much she paid for them (which is something we like to do!)  Immediately I became excited because I knew that I could (or at least) try to “pull” off these jeans.

In lieu of the upcoming holiday (Mother’s Day) I wanted to write this post for my mom and show her how I “styled” my embroidered jeans.  Like the quote says, “April Showers brings May Flowers!”

 INTERVIEW WITH LUXEFOIL DESIGNER/COMPANY PRESIDENT

TRAVIS AYERS

What inspired you to enter the luxury watch industry?

I love watches but most of all I love innovation.  One day I was flipping through a catalogue, I think it was Nordstrom, and was immediately drawn to the accessories and  watches.  Around the same time, back in the lab, I was examining a foil through a microscope and realized it wasn’t just functional, it was beautiful.  The shine, color and reflection it produced, along with the quality that I know we’re able to achieve seemed the perfect fit for the watch industry.

How long have you been working in this?

We have been producing material for the aerospace industry for nearly 40 years but are very new to the watch and luxury goods industry.  It’s quite a different world and we’re learning so much as we prepare for Baselworld.

In your opinion, what makes your materials unique?  How can they help watch brands?

LuxeFoil™ materials are produced with a patent-pending process that involves the latest nano fabrication techniques, similar to those in semiconductor and photovoltaic industries, can are used as a design element to enhance the face of a watch.  We makes foils 500x thinner than a human hair, in approximately 20 different materials.  For example:   Gold, Platinum, Titanium.  We even offer more exotic materials such as Zirconium, Niobium, Boron, Palladium, Silicon, Rhodium, that routinely survive rocket shots launching them into space.

What are some of your greatest accomplishments?

We have been tasked by major space agencies around the world, including NASA, The European Space Agency (ESA)and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.  In fact, our materials will be launched on ESA’s first mission to Mercury in 2015.  Our biggest fashion-related accomplishment at this point is showing at Baselworld, the largest watch and jewelry show in the world which takes place this week in Basel, Switzerland.  We’ve received great response from our initial outreach and are looking forward to the many meetings we have scheduled with some of the top watchmakers in the world.

What’s your favorite watch or watch companies?

I have a Rolex Submariner that my wife bought me when I finished my MBA but I am also drawn to several IWC designs.

What other experience do you want to share about working in the fashion industry (stylist, retail, marketing, etc.)?

The outreach and brand positioning in the luxury market is entirely different from dealing with Space Agencies.  It is such a vast market and branding is much more intentional.  It is very exciting to learn.

What’s in the future for LuxeFoil?

We expect to offer our stunning materials to watch companies from around the world.

Madewell Shopping Party hosted by Taliah Ferguson of Fashion Was Here

As a blogger, there’s nothing like the feeling of networking with those in the industry and living your passion.  Last thursday, I attended the Madewell store shopping party which was hosted by fellow, local blogger Taliah from the site Fashion Was Here.

For those that may not know, Madewell is a brand extension (sister store) of the J. Crew company.  The store was launched to attract a younger, hipper crowd while holding true to the company’s style which is chic and comfortable.

This was my first time visiting the boutique and I was impressed with the quality of the clothing and the accessories.

Honestly, my personal style is more on the lines of being “Preppy” with a touch of “American Classic” and a hint of “Hollywood Glamour.”

So you’re asking, what does all of that mean? I love basic t shirts, blazers, oversized sunglasses (the bigger the better) pearls, and jeans.

When I entered the Madewell store, it had all of the components that would make up my wardrobe but I decided not to get distracted because I was there for a store event (being professional.)

While attending the event, the store provided drinks and treats, a 20% off discount on all merchandise, and prizes.  But, the fun aspect of the night was the style challenge.

During the style challenge, participants were placed into groups and asked to create a style based upon the guidelines of the store/host.

DSC_0507

Everyone wanted to win this challenge! Fashionistas raced around the store in search of clothing and accessories to fit their mannequin or model.

With all of the great displays, it was hard to judge the contest!

Overall, this was a fun event and a great opportunity to meet other bloggers, photographers, and local “fashion lovers.”

{REPOST} Dressing for a Fashion Event 101

To support the fashion industry in the state of Maryland, I will be attending Baltimore Fashion Week 2012. Although it’s exciting to see what each designer has to offer, there’s always a question of, “What should I wear to a fashion show or how should I dress?”

Whether it’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week or you’re attending Fashion’s Night Out, most participants want to look sleek, chic, and pulled together.   And it doesn’t hurt to try a new trend or wear something that’s created by the designer.

But, if you want to make a statement, keep in mind (when shopping) what’s your personal style.  Below I have created some style inspiration for attending a fashion event!

Dressing For A Fashion Event 101:

1.   Support the Designer (if you can) and wear something from a previous collection.

2.  Seek to look casual and chic.  For example, wear a pair of well fit slacks and blazer; a sheath dress with pumps; or jumpsuit with bold accessories.

3.  Take into consideration the time and season of the event. Most shows happen early fall, mid winter, and early spring.

4.  Carry an oversized bag or clutch for your camera, notebook, e tablet, or any other important accessories.

5.  If you’re walking to a variety of shows, parties, or boutiques keep a pair of flats in your purse.  Nothing is worth having foot pain at the end of the night!

Polka Dot Prints: The Latest Obsession

Polka dots have become my latest fashion obsession.  There’s something about combining this pattern with a bold color or dainty accessory that makes it a great fashion look.

And polka dots (in today’s design) can be seen in a variety of hues and textures.  This pattern basically goes with anything!

To my surprise,  I was able to find a “delectable” pair of polka dot jeans (with a zipper on the side.)  I instantly gravitated towards these jeans because I have never seen a pair (of jeans) in this pattern and of course they were a great price.

At that time, I wasn’t quit sure how I would wear the jeans but I knew they were a good purchase.  Luckily, after brining them home I discovered several options for my new polka dots jeans.

For me, the most important point to remember about polka dots is that this pattern can refresh any wardrobe and be worn year round.  Whether a summer blouse, cashmere sweater, or fitted blazer, polka dots are a fashion must have.

The Red Brunch at Tabaq Bistro: Networking Event

On Sunday, December 16, 2012 I attended “The Red Room” Brunch located at Tabaq Bistro in Washington D.C.  The purpose of  the event was for individuals in the Baltimore/Washington area to network, collaborate, and share ideas.  In addition, the new brunch series supported Carl Johnson and Silva Lining with their “Drive 2 Provide” Toy Drive.

During the brunch, Candice Nicole and Tommie Collins also raffled several gifts such as concert tickets, event tickets, beverages, art work, etc.   The brunch menu included a variety of breakfast foods ranging from mimosas, blood marys, omelets, pancakes, steak, eggs, and fruit.

There’s nothing like pancakes, fruit, and mimosas!

Paris Street Style and Interior Design

Fashion is constantly evolving and we have to consider how it makes an impact from an international perspective.  The design qualities that are happening overseas not only makes a large presence in the American industry but also within cities around the world.

With that being said, the street style and interior design of Paris, France can not be overlooked!  Paris is considered to be one of the fashion capitals but also the home of several high fashion designers such as Chanel, Givenchy, Hermes, YSL, and Louis Vuitton.

Quick Fashion History:  Paris, France

The french were the first to create fashion as an industry, going back as early as the 17th century.   Their royal court started the idealism of fashion trends.  This also began the evolution of fashion designers, wigs (beauty industry) and ready to wear apparel.  For additional information click on the link:
